It’s been nine years since Castle ended with its Season 8 finale, wrapping up the stories of the show’s beloved characters, Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic).

Viewers couldn’t help but notice the chemistry between Castle and Beckett from the very beginning in 2009, but it was a slow burn for them to finally get together. Once they did, did it last? Scroll down for a refresh of the fictional couple’s romance and everything we know about Fillion and Katic’s real-life relationship.

Did Castle and Beckett end up together?

Yes, Castle and Beckett did end up together in the series finale of Castle. Their characters finally got together during Season 4 and tied the knot in Season 7. At the very end of the finale, time flashed forward seven years and showed Castle and Beckett together with three kids.

Before they got their happy ending, though, they were both shot by Caleb (Kristoffer Polaha). When Castle filmed its Season 8 finale, the future of the show was still up in the air, so EPs Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter shot two different endings, with one being Castle and Beckett’s happily ever after, which aired because the show was canceled.

Since it was previously announced that Katic would not be returning to Castle if the show got a ninth season, it’s theorized that her character would’ve died after the Season 8 finale shooting. The alternate Season 8 ending reportedly would have left off with the fates of Castle and Beckett up in the air, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Did Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic date?

While many fans suspect that Fillion and Katic were romantically involved in real life, their rumored relationship has not been confirmed, and neither of them have publicly commented on the rumors.

Did Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic get along?

Fillion and Katic’s offscreen relationship was rumored to be tense. Although the actors themselves have never addressed rumors of a feud, it was widely reported that they did not get along.

“Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion completely despise each other,” Us Weekly reported amid the show’s final season in 2016. “They will not speak when they are off set, and this has been going on for seasons now.”

The mag alleged that Katic and Fillion were forced to go to counseling in order to work together civilly. However, a rep for the actress denied the claims, insisting that Katic had “absolutely no issues” with Fillion.

Despite the denial, Us Weekly’s sources stood by the allegations with claims that Katic would cry in her dressing room because of how Fillion treated her. “The friction was very evident. Nathan has been nasty to Stana for a long time. Stana was a pro, just wanted to get in there and do her job.”

After Katic announced her exit from the show, Fillion wrote a pleasant but fairly neutral message about her departure. “Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character Beckett who will live on for all of us as one of the greatest police officers on television. I wish her well, and have no doubt she will succeed in everything she pursues. She will be missed,” he shared.

Why did Stana Katic leave Castle?

In April 2016, it was announced that Katic would be leaving Castle at the end of Season 8, which was nearing its finale. Less than one month later, it was confirmed that the show was canceled and there would be no Season 9, despite Fillion reportedly renewing his contract for another season.

Before the cancellation, Katic was blindsided by the decision to get rid of her character, which was reportedly due to “budgetary” reasons. “I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It hurt and it was a harsh ending, but now, nearly two years later…I met so many beautiful people on that project, and we collaborated on something really unique in that it’s not every day that you get a show, or a series, that has eight seasons and that it was a hit for the network.”

She continued, “It would be a disservice to those people, to the work that we did together, and to my work, which I feel contributed, in part, to the success of the show, to be anything but grateful because, at the end of the day, that was a fantastic platform. It was a formative experience, and we told a love story that I feel moved people, touched people, and I can’t be anything but glad that I was a part of something like that. I hope it remains something special in viewers’ minds forever.”

ABC exec Channing Dungey explained the decision to announce Katic’s departure just weeks before the cancellation and said it was because the choices were made by two separate entities: the studio and the network. “We were always very upfront with the studio and the producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing the show back for a Season 9. But the studio has to do what they need to do in order to prepare for the possibility of a Season 9,” she said. “So they did what they felt what they needed to do in order to be ready should they get the nod. And ultimately for us at the network, we did not feel that it was the right thing to do to order another season.”
