Netflix

Garrett Wareing is having his big breakthrough moment in the new Netflix series Ransom Canyon. While the rising star has several years of acting experience under his belt, this is his first major leading role.

Before the show premieres, Swooon is rounding up everything you need to know about the 23-year-old, including which past roles you may recognize him from. Scroll down for a deep dive into the actor!

Who is Garrett Wareing in Ransom Canyon?

Wareing plays Lucas Russell in the show, which is based on Jodi Thomas’ book series of the same name (there are seven books total in the series).

According to his character description, Lucas works on a ranch to help provide for his family. “He’s determined to achieve a brighter future than Ransom Canyon has to offer, and he’s got the mind and work ethic to propel him there,” the synopsis reveals. “This mindset aligns perfectly with head cheerleader Lauren’s (Lizzy Greene) desire to leave Ransom, and the two find that may not be the only desire they have in common.”

In order to play a cowboy, Wareing told Us Weekly he trained three hours a day for a month.

Where is Garrett Wareing from?

Wareing was born and raised in College Station, Texas, but he eventually relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. His move came shortly after he joined the International Modeling & Talent Association in 2013.

What else has Garrett Wareing starred in?

Wareing made his acting debut by starring in two short films in 2013. In 2014, he had a role in Boychoir, which required him to sing. Despite not having much singing experience, Wareing was tapped for the film.

“All of the other boys (who played the members of the choir) had theatre backgrounds — they were all singers, and then there was me who had no theatre background and no singing experience,” he shared. “I trained for two weeks before we started filming at the American Boychoir School with the conductor, Fernando, so I got to learn the music, and while I was on set, I did sing.” The film starred Dustin Hoffman and Kathy Bates.

In 2016, Wareing starred in Independence Day: Resurgence. His other film credits include God Is a Bullet and Dead Sea, and he’ll also appear in this year’s The Long Walk.

On television, Wareing had a guest role on Chicago Med in 2018. He was then cast as Zach in 2019’s Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists and had his biggest television moment on Season 2 of Manifest, where he played TJ Morrison. He was a recurring character throughout the season and returned during the second half of the show’s fourth and final season as well.

In 2022, Wareing also made his directorial debut with the film The Difficulties of Being Drunk Alone.
