Heartstopper fans, grab your tissues, because Kit Connor and Joe Locke just traded in their signature “hi” for a bittersweet “bye” to Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring.

On April 22, it was announced that the fan-favorite queer love story Heartstopper would be returning to Netflix! However, instead of the fourth and final season that many fans expected, Kit Connor and Joe Locke would conclude the beloved romance of Nick and Charlie by starring in (and executive producing!) a Heartstopper feature film.

A few months removed from the announcement, Heartstopper stars Connor and Locke were spotted filming at a train station in Leeds, and the majority of the cast were photographed together at a Billie Eilish concert on July 14.  As of July 27, the Heartstopper film, titled Heartstopper Forever (sobbing at that one, btw), has officially wrapped and moved into post-production.

According to Netflix, the highly anticipated conclusion to Nick and Charlie’s love story will answer the question: “Can first loves really last forever?” Based on Alice Oseman‘s upcoming Heartstopper graphic novel, the film will continue where Season 3 left off.

The official synopsis reads: “After Season 3, the couple is inseparable. But, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, Nick and Charlie’s friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on.”

When is Heartstopper Forever coming out?

According to a reel on the official Heartstopper Instagram page, Heartstopper Forever will hit Netflix in 2026. On June 9, Netflix revealed that the Heartstopper movie was officially in production. Oseman joined Connor and Locke on set for the first day.

While the film may be a ways away, Oseman has assured fans that it will be worth the wait. “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman shared with Netflix. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

On July 27, Heartstopper Forever‘s very own Charlie and Nick posted that filming had officially wrapped on the Heartstopper universe. Posing for a saturated photo with Connor, Locke shared with Heartstopper fans, “Bye charlie x thankyou <3.” On his Instagram Story, Locke told fans, “Wrapped forever ❤️,” teasing the title of the film, before sharing a polaroid of his on and off-camera bestie, Tobie Donovan, who plays Isaac Henderson. Connor also posted a photo with Locke on his Instagram Story, telling Heartstopper fans, “Wrapped ❤️ thank you for everything.”

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman also took to their Instagram. “Day 35. That’s a wrap on the Heartstopper film 🍂,” the author began. “I’d never worked in a team in my career before working on the Heartstopper screen adaptation, and the Heartstopper shoots have shown me what magic can happen when so many creative minds come together. Heartstopper means the world to me, and it’s always been a little scary to put it into other people’s hands, but it’s been met with so much care and passion and dedication and love. I’m so thankful to everyone who has been a part of it… so far! Now we begin the edit!!!”

Who is returning for Heartstopper Forever?

Netflix has confirmed that “Kit Connor and Joe Locke will return to lead the Heartstopper feature film as teen lovebirds Nick and Charlie.” However, aside from Locke and Connor, the rest of the cast for the Heartstopper movie has not been announced.

Based on a photo posted by Netflix UK of the majority of the original Heartstopper cast together at a Billie Eilish concert during filming, it appears that Heartstopper Forever will feature the same cast as the beloved show. In the image, Connor and Locke pose with Yasmin Finney (Elle), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), Jenny Walser (Tori), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Nima Taleghani (Mr. Farouk), Fisayo Akinade (Mr. Ajayi), and Darragh Hand (Michael).

While series regular William Gao (Tao) was not photographed at the Eilish concert, Kit Connor sported a shirt with Gao’s face on it, making it clear that the beloved character had not been forgotten. With Netflix UK commenting, “nice t-shirt @kit.connor 👀,” we’re not convinced that Gao will be absent from the film.

Netflix has confirmed some of the production team behind the film. In their announcement, the streamer stated that Oseman is writing the romance film, and the executive producers will be Oseman, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Euros Lyn, Locke, and Connor. As for the director, Netflix has announced that Still Alice helmer Wash Westmoreland will direct.

What does this mean for Heartstopper Season 4?

While we are thrilled that there will be a Heartstopper film, the news is bittersweet. Unfortunately, the film will conclude the series, and there will be no Heartstopper Season 4.

This news has been incredibly divisive for fans of the show, who have made their feelings known in the comments of Netflix’s Instagram announcement. Some fans have taken a moment to mourn the fourth season that could have been. As one commenter put it, “I’m not ready for it to end just yet. 8 30-minute episodes already wasn’t long enough.” However, others were incredibly stoked, including one who commented, “I’ll need the movie to be about 17 hours long thanks.”

Locke also made his enthusiasm known, cheekily commenting, “I fancy a movie.” No matter where they stand on the movie, everyone can agree that any new Heartstopper content is a good thing. As one commenter put it, “[Heartstopper] isn’t just a show — it’s a safe place, a heartbeat, a quiet ‘you’re not alone’ in a loud world.”

When is Alice Oseman’s next graphic novel coming out?

At this time, there is no set release date for Oseman’s sixth and final volume of Heartstopper. Along with the film announcement, Oseman posted confirmation that the adaptation will share a plot with their sixth Heartstopper graphic novel. They stated, “We are making a feature film to conclude the Heartstopper screen adaptation, based on Heartstopper Volume 6 and the ‘Nick and Charlie’ novella. We are getting to tell the end of the story!!!”

According to Deadline, “Oseman has indicated that ideally, the last book would drop ahead of the TV series’ conclusion.” Now that the TV series will end with a feature film, we assume the graphic novel is likely to drop before the onscreen conclusion.

What happened at the end of Heartstopper Season 3?

Nick and Charlie saw quite a few highs and lows during the third season of Heartstopper. For the first time as a couple, they faced a taste of long distance when Nick travelled to Mallorca with his aunt (Hayley Atwell). While Nick was away, Charlie’s eating disorder and overall struggle with his mental health came to a head.

During the season, Charlie sought treatment at an inpatient mental health clinic, where he received an OCD [Obsessive-compulsive disorder] diagnosis. Reunited at the end of the season, Nick and Charlie took their relationship to the next level by having sex for the first time.
