Oh, the power of first love. Netflix’s Forever, based on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel, has already captured the hearts of viewers across the globe.

Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (Lovie Simone) are childhood friends who reconnect and fall deeply in love during their high school years. The couple’s beautiful tale of first love also features them navigating school, their identity, and their transition into adulthood.

If you’ve already binged the eight-episode first season, you might be wondering if a Season 2 is on the horizon. Scroll down to get the latest updates about Forever Season 2.

Will Forever get a Season 2?

Netflix hasn’t announced whether or not Forever will get a Season 2. The series was initially billed as a limited series, but the cast and creatives involved have expressed interest in continuing the story.

Justin and Keisha’s love story seemingly came to an end in the final episode, but are first loves ever really over? That is the big question.

How did Forever on Netflix end?

After a year and a half together, Justin and Keisha decide to end their relationship as they prepare to graduate. Keisha is headed off to Howard University on a track scholarship, while Justin is trying to figure what he truly wants.

Their breakup is painful but necessary. Justin acknowledges that he’ll continue to “keep making” Keisha his whole world if they don’t make a clean break. Keisha urges Justin to put himself first for once and not cave to his parents’ expectations. He ends up taking a gap year from Northwestern to pursue music. The love between them is evident in their final dinner out together. For hopeless romantics, it’s a shred of hope for these two. Or it’s a final goodbye of two people who still love each other but are headed down different paths.

Would Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone return for Season 2?

If Forever did get renewed for Season 2, most fans would want Justin and Keisha’s story to continue. Showrunner/creator/writer Mara Brock Akil revealed that she’s open to a second season.

“There’s absolutely room for that,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “In this art form, I don’t make it for myself. I’m making it for an audience. I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”

Simone told Swooon that she’d love to explore more of Keisha’s story in a Season 2. The actress would want to see her character discover “what she’s really interested in post-high school. I feel like high school was her world. High school was her everything. It was the blueprint to the next step. So I do want to see what it looks like for Keisha to figure out her next blueprint and her next step and seeing what she looks like in the middle of that, rather in the middle of meeting a lover for the first time.”

As for Justin and Keisha’s future, Simone believes that these two would reconnect. “I think a lot of first loves reconnect, even if it doesn’t last forever, they always reconnect,” she revealed.

While a second season focusing Justin and Keisha is definitely possible, Forever could also pursue the anthology route and center around another young couple.
