Farmer John Sansone is a taken man. The Farmer Wants a Wife star made his final pick in the Season 3 finale and chose Claire Dirette to take the next step with once the cameras stopped rolling.

According to the couple, it’s been about “seven or eight months” since filming ended, and they’re still going strong. Following the May 22 finale, John and Claire will be able to finally go public with their romance after keeping it a secret for so long.

Thankfully, keeping their relationship under wraps hasn’t been difficult for them. “It’s not as challenging as most would think. I’m not a big fan of going into areas with massive crowds anyway, so it’s really not that tough,” John quipped.

The couple spoke with Swooon while in Chicago, which is Claire’s home base at the moment. “There’s so many good restaurants and just fun places, so I’m excited to show him around and show all the things that I like here. Hopefully, he can like Chicago a little bit more,” Claire said.

As for their next plans as a couple, John revealed they “don’t really have any.” They’re taking their relationship one day at a time. “I think our biggest secret success is just doing this without any pressure whatsoever,” John noted. “The night after the finale, we were just talking, and we’re like, ‘Let’s just give this a try to see how it goes. Don’t put any expiration dates. Don’t put any requirements on it, just go at it day by day. I think that’s just one of the secrets to the success of our relationship.”

Obviously, an engagement is not on the horizon yet. “I think we’re just excited to be able to be in public and around each other as friends and family for the first time,” Claire said.

Swooon also asked John about his desire for a “traditional family,” meaning he works and his wife stays at home with the kids. Have they had further discussions about this? “Occasionally we’ll have conversations like that,” John said. “I think the one of the biggest drivers of the success of our relationship also is communication. We’re able to just communicate and talk through stuff without getting riled up or getting emotions involved, and we usually come to understandings. I think that’s one of the coolest things about it. So in terms of an all out massive discussion, ultimatum type of thing, now that hasn’t happened, but we’ve had miniature conversations here and there about certain things.”

Claire added, “The whole outcome of the show was a surprise for probably everyone, including ourselves. We didn’t know how well we would get along, especially with our differences. And we get along so well. We communicate really well, and I think what we’ve learned from all of our conversations is that we were just raised so differently, and we’re both a product of that, so it hasn’t been hard to come to some sort of understanding of each other in those conversations.”

John also addressed the situation with Season 3 dater Samantha Riehl, who left the show earlier in the season, and the supposed drama between them. Is there really bad blood? “I hate to break it to you, no. I wish I had more tea for you guys,” John revealed. “It’s a very boring story, and most of it is fan driven. Unfortunately, there’s nothing there.”

The Missouri native acknowledged that he didn’t “take a proactive approach of putting [the drama] to bed, so you can just kind of do with that as you will. I thought it was an interesting way to boost the show’s ratings, which I think it certainly did. That’s why I didn’t really jump in and say ‘Hey, no, that didn’t happen.’ I just kind of took a hands-off approach and let the fans eat each other, so to speak.”
