E. Lockhart published We Were Liars in 2014, during the height of YA romances, Tumblr, the Ice Bucket Challenge, and One Direction. Over a decade after the original publication, we’re thrilled to say that Cadence, Gat, and the rest of the Liars have finally made their way off the page and onto the small screen.
We Were Liars follows the affluent Sinclair family, who live (at least during the summer) on a private island off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. While the Sinclairs pride themselves on maintaining a strait-laced public appearance, cracks begin to show as the youngest generation fails to blindly abide by their grandfather’s questionable moral compass.
The story follows the oldest grandchild, Cadence, who suffers migraines and memory loss after a mysterious accident. Upon returning to the island for the first time since, Cadence turns to her fellow “Liars,” aka her cousins, Johnny and Mirren, and their friend Gat, who spends his summers on the island with them. However, while she expected the rest of the family to shield her from what happened, she is shocked to find out that her closest friends (and the boy she loves) are staying tight-lipped, too.
