Mel Owens made headlines with his new comments about The Golden Bachelor Season 2, and now others are weighing in.

Owens revealed during a recent episode of the MGoBlue podcast that he told producers his preferred age range for his contestants is between 45 and 60. “Then we had lunch with the executive producer. I said, ‘If they’re over 60, I’m cutting them,'” he added. “[They said], ‘Oh, no, this is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor, but they’re going to be hot, don’t worry about it, don’t worry about it.’ He goes, ‘You can’t use the word cut,’ I go, ‘That’s an NFL term.'”

Owens’ focus on age is something Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause is not a fan of. “We love the Golden Bachelor because of how wholesome it is,” the Netflix personality captioned a screenshot of an article about Owens’ comments via her Instagram Story on Thursday, June 26. “This type of energy will ruin it.”

Adding to her feelings, Stause used the song “Hell To Da Naw Naw Naw” by Bishop Bullwinkle over the post.

Several Bachelor Nation fans also took to social media to express their mixed feelings about Owens’ age range preferences. “[The Golden Bachelor] should recast Mel Owens immediately. We want Charles [Ling] for Golden Bachelor!” one X user wrote. “But if that’s not possible, please at least give us someone who is actually interested in dating the cast of golden women who are 60+.”

A second fan tweeted, “I was wondering when this show would get pretentious and therefore ruin the entire premise of it. I don’t like it anyway but had to put my two cents in,” while another posted, “If that isn’t a walking red flag, I don’t what the hell is.”

However, others supported Owens for being candid about what he’s looking for in a partner. “Seems well thought out, to me. He has preferences, like we all do,” one fan wrote via X. A different user stated, “At least he’s honest about what he wants. Can’t fault him for that. Better than wasting everyone’s time and energy.”

On the MGoBlue podcast, Owens went on to note that he knows nothing about the women who will join his season of the ABC reality dating series other than they are “going to be beautiful.”

“They gotta be fit because I stay in shape. And I told [producers], ‘Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, that kind of stuff,'” he continued. “I know there’s amazing women out there. Someone who’s a lifetime learner, enjoys to love life, and work out, and stay fit, and eat, and have fun, and be energetic, and live life.”

Owens follows in the footsteps of Gerry Turner as the TV franchise’s second Golden Bachelor lead. Turner proposed to Theresa Nist on the show’s debut season in 2023, and the two tied the knot during ABC’s live The Golden Wedding special in January 2024. They announced their breakup three months later and reached a divorce settlement that June.
