‘The Love Hypothesis’: First Look at Lili Reinhart & Tom Bateman on Set (VIDEO)
Class is in session! Just one day after we found out Lili Reinhart is leading The Love Hypothesis movie adaptation, Tom Bateman was revealed as her onscreen love interest. What’s more, we just got our first look at the duo in action.
The Riverdale actress is playing Olive, a third-year Ph.D. student who begins a fake relationship with Stanford professor Adam Carlsen. In Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 novel, their scheme is meant to convince Olive’s friend that she’s over her ex, and Adam thinks it will make him appear settled at Stanford while he’s trying to secure funding.
Yesterday, Reinhart shared a glimpse of herself in costume, lab coat and all, and she’s keeping The Love Hypothesis fans fed today. She posted a TikTok video of herself and Bateman doing the “Nice to Meet You” trend, and a university campus seems to be in the background.
If you aren’t chronically online like we are, the trend involves shaking hands with your partner while PinkPantheress’ song “Illegal” plays. Long story short, it’s about poking fun at unconventional relationships, and Olive and Adam’s definitely fit the bill.

Fans reacted to Bateman’s casting in the comments. “The blank stare, tall, handsome, can’t tell if he hates you … oh welcome home Adam Carlsen,” one user wrote, which Reinhart liked.
Another commenter rightly pointed out that Bateman happens to be married to actress Daisy Ridley, whose Star Wars character was the inspiration for The Love Hypothesis. That’s right: In its first form, Hazelwood’s novel was Rey and Kylo (Adam Driver) fanfiction. Some readers hoped that Ridley and Driver would play Olive and Adam, but it wasn’t meant to be.
