We’ll never say no to another Jane Austen adaptation.

Earlier this year, we found out a Pride and Prejudice miniseries is in the works at Netflix, and now, Sense and Sensibility is getting the remake treatment. Focus Features is turning Austen’s first novel into a movie. Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar-Jones will lead as the practical Elinor Dashwood, and we’re excited to see how her take compares to Emma Thompson‘s performance in the beloved 1995 film.

We’re still a ways off from being able to compare the two — the new movie was only just announced in June 2025 but we decided to do a deep dive into all things Sense and Sensibility in the meantime. Keep reading for everything we know about the upcoming project, which includes the cast list, director, and more.

When is Sense and Sensibility coming out?

The new Sense and Sensibility movie doesn’t have a release date yet. Production is now underway, so it’ll be 2026 or later before the film is released.

Alongside Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles (Hanna) will play Marianne, the more emotional Dashwood sister. George MacKay (1917) will bring Elinor’s love interest, Edward Ferrars, to life. Caitríona Balfe (Outlander) will play the Dashwood matriarch. Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) is Mrs. Jennings, who houses the sisters when they visit London. Bodhi Rae Breathnach is the youngest Dashwood sister, Margaret.

As for Marianne’s love interests, Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead) stars John Willoughby, and Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World) as her second suitor, Colonel Brandon.

Who is making Sense and Sensibility?

Georgia Oakley, known for Little Bird and Blue Jean, is directing the adaptation. The script comes from author Diana Reid, who wrote the novels Love & Virtue and Seeing Other People. On the producing side of things are Jo Wallett, November Pictures’ India Flint, and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

What is Sense and Sensibility about?

Austen’s first book is a satirical coming-of-age story centered around 19-year-old Elinor and 17-year-old Marianne. After their father dies, their down-and-out family move to a cottage in the countryside, and they have to deal with their change in status. Elinor, who embodies “sense” and leads with her head, falls in love with Edward. Marianne, who follows her heart, is torn between Willoughby and the older Colonel Brandon.

Is there a Sense and Sensibility trailer?
