Did Sam Winchester Marry Eileen? ‘Supernatural’ Boss Spills on Finale’s Mystery Wife

Supernatural may have wrapped five years ago, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still think about it — especially the series finale.
Now that TV Guide Magazine is revisiting the show in honor of its 20th anniversary, there was an opportunity to ask showrunner Andrew Dabb all of our burning questions about the show’s ending, including the identity of Sam’s mystery wife.
If you’re in need of a refresher, allow us to give you one: The show ends with the two Winchester brothers reuniting in Heaven. However, Dean (Jensen Ackles) got there decades before Sam (Jared Padalecki). After the elder Winchester brother dies on a run-of-the-mill hunt gone wrong, Sam carries on with the rest of his life.
During the ending montage, Dean cruises around Heaven in the Impala while Sam has a family. In one part, Sam plays catch with his son in the yard, while a woman who is presumably Sam’s wife looks on in the background. She’s out of focus, so fans have been wondering who Sam married for years. Was it Eileen (Shoshannah Stern), his resurrected, on-again, off-again love interest and fellow hunter?
“We wanted someone there, so it wasn’t like there was no female presence at all,” Dabb told TV Insider. “But at the same time, do you cast someone totally brand new that the audience will have not seen before? Or do you keep it a little vague and people can imply whatever they want to imply?”
Since the episode was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Supernatural team went the latter route. They would’ve liked to include Eileen, but Stern couldn’t travel to Vancouver, where it was filmed. “I’m not saying they wouldn’t have done it,” Dabb continued. “They may have. The logistical challenge of bringing a lot of people in, being the first show up during COVID, was just not feasible on our end.”
Still, in Dabb’s mind, Sam ended up with Eileen. “People can fill in whatever they want, and they’re free to. But certainly in my mind, that’s what we were building toward,” he said.
What do you think, Supernatural fans? Did you already assume Sam and Eileen were endgame, or did you picture him with someone else? Let us know in the comments below!
