‘Outlander’ Star Nell Hudson Gives Birth to First Child: ‘Need a New Word for Love’
A new bairn has entered the chat! The Outlander family is growing by one!
Ahead of the eighth and final season of the Starz drama and the August 8 premiere of the prequel, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, one of the original show’s cast members announced exciting family news.
Nell Hudson now has something in common with her Outlander character: She’s a girl mom! The actress, who plays the complicated Laoghaire MacKenzie in the Starz series, has revealed that she gave birth to her first child.
“I can’t believe everyone ever was given birth to by a woman and we all just go around like it’s normal,” she captioned a series of Instagram photos on August 6. The first showed her empty hospital bed, and the next her daughter’s tiny arm. “MOTHERS – I am in awe of all of you.” The new mom went on to say that she feels “broken in two in the best possible way” and that she “need[s] a new word for love.”

Hudson’s Outlander castmates were quick to share the love in the comments. One of them was one of her on screen daughter, Lauren Lyle. The Marsali Fraser actress wrote, “Nell 😭🫶🏼❤️ congratulations mum xxxx.” Caitríona Balfe, aka Claire Frasher, commented, “Congratulations Nell … sending lots of love and welcome to the greatest club x.”
Joey Phillips, who plays Quaker surgeon Denzell Hunter in Season 7, didn’t interact with Hudson on the show, but that didn’t stop the actor from cheering her on. “You’re amazing!!!” his comment reads. “Congratulations you beautiful little family 😭♥️ ”
Actress Rosie Day, whose character Mary Hawkins appears in Season 2, followed suit. “Oh Nell!! Congratulations Wonder Woman!!!! ❤️❤️❤️,” she wrote.
Ever since she shared the news of her pregnancy in March, Hudson’s been documenting her journey on social media. At one point, she even reposted a photo of Laoghaire, who has a displeased expression on her face. “Now I’m going to be a mother I realise I’ve got my don’t-mess-with-me expression down,” she quipped in the caption.
While her widowed character enters a rocky marriage with Sam Heughan‘s Jamie — Claire had traveled forward in time to the present day — Hudson’s real-life love is far less complicated. She shares her daughter with her producer husband Max King, whom she tied the knot with earlier this summer.
The 34-year-old shared wedding photos, in which she can be seen cradling her baby bump, on July 4. “What can I say that hasn’t ever been said it really was the best day ever ❤️,” she said.
