It is a truth universally acknowledged that when a Pride and Prejudice adaptation is announced, fans must be in want of a glimpse at the new Mr. Darcy.

On April 10, Netflix announced that Jack Lowden, best known for portraying River Cartwright in Slow Horses, would be taking on the role of one of literature’s most beloved (and angsty) male leads, Mr. Darcy, in Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice.

Several months later, fans have finally gotten their first taste of Lowden’s Mr. Darcy — but not in the way most industry professionals would have wanted. Instead of a teaser trailer, photos, or anything in between, Lowden’s Darcy debut came via Threads, when a fan posted a video of Lowden in costume, commenting, “Mr Darcy right outside my window….”

Fans immediately took to Instagram to share their excitement about Lowden’s casting with comments like, “So excited he’s so perfect for this role!” and “Darcy 😍🥵🔥 I’m so seated for Jack.” However, not everyone was thrilled to see premature footage of the actor in character.

Nancy Meyers, the writer, producer, and director behind works like Father of the Bride and The Holiday, posted on her Instagram Story that she is not thrilled about the Darcy leak, to say the least.

Meyers wrote, “Can we please STOP showing movies and TV shows being made?! I’m closing my eyes. I don’t want to see Mr. Darcy getting dressed!” To the fans who posted the video, Meyers proclaimed, “All the magic is going away! C’mon!”

This leak comes after a single official photo of Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, and other leading ladies of the six-part series walking in costume was released.
