After multiple arguments that seemingly came out of thin air, Love Is Blind Season 9 stars Annie Lancaster and Nick Amato split before they could make it to their wedding day.

Despite finding themselves at the heart of two love triangles in the pods, Annie and Nick got engaged sight unseen. Even though Annie was 100% sure she “made the right choice” after meeting her ex, Brenden Guthrie, face-to-face, it turns out that her relationship with Nick was not as strong as she had once believed.

Below you can find the full story behind Nick and Annie’s messy breakup, including the argument that changed everything, the definitive reason why Nick called things off, and who the heck Annie was texting mid-breakup.

What did Nick and Annie argue about the night before they broke up?

The night before they split, Nick and Annie had another argument in which he felt she had put words in his mouth. As the duo ate a chalupa and other Mexican takeout, Annie told him, “It’s so dumb… How much I love you,” before claiming that he did not feel as strongly for her as she did for him. He told her, “I do love you, and if you can’t see that, it’s concerning.”

Later in the conversation, Nick perfectly summarized the dissonance in Annie’s argument, telling her, “You’re putting me through the extremes right now in so many ways. You’re saying, you’re showing up for me, you’re not showing up for me. I love you, you don’t love me.” The next day, Annie told Nick that she drank too much that night and was speaking without thinking.

Why did Nick and Annie break up?

Nick broke up with Annie due to “fundamental disagreements.” The day after the Pod Squad meet-up, Nick told Annie that even though he had been happy with her, their argument was a breaking point for him. He continued, “Getting to the altar, that’s not a happy idea for me.” While Annie still wanted to get married and asked him to “please just try,” he stood firm, stating, “The wedding is not something I want to do.”

Claiming that she knew she would be a great wife and mother, Annie seemingly refused to take no for an answer, all while smiling through their split. She told him, “It’s not fair of you to give me a no.”

As Nick reconciled with Annie’s constant claims that he was not that in love with her, he asked, “How can your love for me sometimes be so deep, then sometimes it feels so shallow?” After that, she picked up her phone, seemingly done with the conversation. Later, Nick directly told her, “The reason I’m not willing to marry you is because I am unhappy.”

Who was Annie texting?

In the middle of the breakup, Annie took out her phone and texted someone, “90% sure no wedding.” While the contact info for the person she was texting was blurred out, it’s clear that they were incredibly quick to respond. They responded “whyyyyy” before Annie told them that she was “currently filming.” It appears that Annie was about to answer, “Nick won’t do it,” before the camera cut away.
