‘Genuine Fraud’: All About ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Star Rain Spencer’s New Adaptation

In October 2025, Deadline announced that Prime Video greenlit an adaptation of We Were Liars author E. Lockhart‘s YA thriller Genuine Fraud. With both The Summer I Turned Pretty breakout star Rain Spencer and writer Sinead Daly attached to the project, the upcoming series joins a massive slate of book-to-screen adaptations from Prime Video, including We Were Liars Season 2 and Off Campus.
According to the official announcement, “Genuine Fraud centers on a social chameleon (Spencer) who reinvents herself as the best friend of a wealthy heiress, then assumes her ‘friend’s’ life when she goes missing.” Below, you can find everything we know about E. What is Genuine Fraud about?
Genuine Fraud follows Jule, who reinvents herself as heiress Imogen, a runaway who was formerly her close friend. Caught between Martha’s Vineyard (a familiar locale for We Were Liars fans) and the shores of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, Genuine Fraud is the perfect novel for any book lover who loves their romance with a side of twists and turns. The only question is: Where’s the real Imogen?
Who has been cast in Genuine Fraud?
At this time, only Spencer has been cast in Genuine Fraud. The Summer I Turned Pretty breakout actress is set to portray Jule and executive produce the project. On the day that the adaptation was announced, Spencer posted, “GENUINE FRAUD. I really couldn’t be more excited ❤️😸❤️❤️!!!” In response, Lockhart commented, “Thrilled to have you. You’ll make a brilliant Jule.” At this time, characters such as Imogen, Forrest, Noa, and Paolo have yet to be cast.
When will Genuine Fraud premiere?
As of October 2025, Genuine Fraud is in development, meaning it has yet to start filming. Seeing as We Were Liars was optioned during 2022 and didn’t come out until 2025, fans shouldn’t expect to see the premiere of Genuine Fraud hit the small screen until 2027 at the earliest.
Who else is involved in the Genuine Fraud adaptation?
Both Spencer and Lockhart are set to executive produce Genuine Fraud alongside creator Sinead Daly (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Tell Me Lies). PKM Productions will executive produce alongside Patrick Moran (Citadel) and Lynley Bird (Panic). Outside of Genuine Fraud, Daly is the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s Midnight Sun, the animated adaptation of the Twilight sequel by the same name, which retells the story from Edward’s perspective.
