‘Golden Bachelor’s Mel Owens Reveals How His Late Dad Would Feel About the Show

Five years before Mel Owens became the lead for Season 2 of The Golden Bachelor, he went through a life-altering year. In 2020, he dealt with the death of his father, Walter Owens, and the end of his marriage to Fabiana Pimentel.
While Fabiana has given her reaction to her ex’s casting —”I mean, it’s going to be bad. But anyway, I don’t want to be involved in this,” she told Daily Mail in July — Mel is now revealing how he thinks his late father would feel about him being on the dating show.
“He would love it,” Mel told Us Weekly, adding that he takes after his dad in a lot of ways. “He was a really calm guy, too. Fiery, but calm,” Mel added. “And I told my [sons], and this is the truth, ‘Whatever my dad said, I did.'”

Mel also took after his dad in the athletics department. Walt was on the basketball and track and field teams in college, and played for the Detroit Stars of the Negro American League from 1953 to 1955. While he turned down the chance to play professionally in the Negro American League after college, he did go on to become a teacher and coach basketball and baseball.
Mel’s journey on The Golden Bachelor is officially winding down. He has three women left heading into the Wednesday, October 22, episode: Debbie Siebers, Peg Munson, and Cindy Cullers. This week will feature the women introducing Mel to their families, which is obviously a pivotal step in the process.
In his interview, Mel admitted that he was still unsure whether he was ready for an engagement at this point in the process. “I like being married. I like the companionship, having a partner and shared experiences, but it has to be someone special,” he shared.
Of his season’s ending, he added, “You won’t believe how we get there, not mechanically, but how we get there emotionally. There’s some movement and twists and turns.”
