Are Geralt & Yennefer Together in ‘The Witcher’? Where They Stand Before Season 4
Geralt and Yennefer’s love story in The Witcher is just as complicated as the world they live in. Like many fantasy shows with sprawling timelines, overlapping storylines, and big battles, it can be easy to lose track of the relationships. That’s where Swooon comes in. We’re focused on all things romance all the time, so we’ve paid close attention to Geralt (Liam Hemsworth, formerly Henry Cavill) and Yen’s (Anya Chalotra) love story over the past three seasons.
With The Witcher‘s fourth and final season arriving in a matter of days, we’ve put together everything you need to remember about Geralt and Yen’s romance. When did they meet? When did they officially get together? What are the most important moments they’ve had together so far? Keep reading for the full romance recap.
When does Geralt meet Yennefer?
In a stroke of fate, Geralt and Yennefer first crossed paths in Season 1, Episode 5, which takes place in 1256. At this point, Yen has shirked her responsibilities as a mage, becoming a small town’s healer while she tries to recover her ability to have children. (Years ago, she sacrificed her womb to complete her magical transformation.) Meanwhile, an insomnia-ridden Geralt decides to find djinn to cure himself.
When the djinn injures Geralt’s friend, Jaskier (Joey Batey), the witcher sets out to find a healer. He’s led to Yen, who’s shacked up in house of the town’s mayor. There, Geralt finds her overseeing a full-on orgy, courtesy of one of her spells. Naturally, sexual tension ensues between the two. Knowing that the djinn could cure her womb, Yen seduces and drugs Geralt so that he can’t stop her from capturing the djinn herself.
Fast forwarding a bit, Yen finds herself in danger from the djinn, and Geralt saves her, using the last of the djinn’s wishes. One thing leads to another, and Geralt and Yen hook up. Geralt’s insomnia is cured afterward.
When do Geralt and Yennefer first get together?
This is a complicated answer. The aforementioned episode isn’t the official start of their relationship. In Episode 6 of Season 1, Geralt and Yennefer meet again years later, when Geralt and Jaskier join a group of dragon hunters. Yen, now acting indifferent to Geralt, is among them. The tension is still there, of course, but Yen figures out that the wish Geralt made in the previous episode has tied their fates together. Are their feelings for each other real or simply magic? They part ways on bad terms.
If we’re being technical, Geralt doesn’t actually say “I love you” until Season 3, which we explain below.
Where do Geralt and Yennefer stand at the end of Season 1?
Yennefer and Geralt don’t interact in Season 1 after Episode 6. In the Season 1 finale, Geralt goes looking for Yen after the Battle of Sodden, during which she used forbidden fire magic to defeat the Nilfgaardian army. She appears (key word there) to die, though Geralt doesn’t know that. As he calls out her name, Geralt and Ciri (Freya Allan) meet for the first time, combining their once-separate storylines. Here first words to Geralt? “Who is Yennefer?” (Yep, the trio is bound by fate.)
What happens between Geralt and Yennefer in Season 2?
Ciri and Geralt find refuge with the other remaining witchers, and Ciri begins her training under them while trying to master her unknown powers. Yennefer, we discover, didn’t die and has been taken prisoner by the mage of Nilfgaard. Yen has lost her powers due to her actions in the Season 1 finale.
It takes a whopping six episodes for Geralt and Yennefer to meet again, the latter now searching for Ciri to regain her magic. (She was directed to Ciri by an evil demon, the Deathless Mother, who wants to take over Ciri’s body, unbeknownst to Geralt.) Geralt, relieved to see his former lover alive, almost gives Yennefer a passionate kiss before Ciri walks in on them. Shortly after, the trio are tracked down by a band of mercenaries, and Yen teaches Ciri how to open a portal, stealing her away and leaving Geralt behind.
Geralt finds them in Episode 7, knowing now what Yennefer is up to. He nearly kills her, but Yen has a change of heart and helps save Ciri from the Deathless Mother. The end of the season finds Geralt, Yen, and Ciri forming an unlikely family unit, though Geralt still doesn’t trust Yen. Still, they’re going to work together to train Ciri.
Are Geralt and Yennefer together in Season 3?
Picking up six months after the Season 2 finale, the trio is still on run from the many people after Ciri and her power. Season 3 begins with a montage of Geralt forgiving Yennefer, and they’re working together still to train Ciri.
Yennefer and Geralt’s romance is on the back burner for a few episodes while they’re separated, though they’re united in their mission. On Yen’s part, she meets with mage Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) to ask for Aretuza’s help. Tissaia allows Ciri to become her apprentice without telling any of the other mages who she is — only after Yen grovels for the Brotherhood of Sorcerers’ forgiveness.
Episode 5 brings Yennefer and Geralt together once again, after she orchestrates a reunion of all mages in the Continent, with the intentions of convincing them to fight against the Nilfgaard invaders. However, there’s a spy in the Brotherhood of sorcerers, so Geralt and Yen also use the Conclave of Mages to sniff them out. Right before we see how the night unfolds, Geralt declares his love to Yen. It’s the first time he’s ever said the words. (Though Chalotra told Tudum, “They’ve always known. She’s always known that love is there. They just don’t vocalize it, I think.”)
There isn’t much more time for romance after that as the show hurtles toward Episode 8. In Episode 6, Yennefer goes back to Aretuza to check on Tissaia, parting ways with Geralt and Ciri and agreeing to find them afterward. Once separated, Geralt senses danger and instructs Ciri to run. It turns out to be the spy Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) on their tail, whose powerful staff leaves Geralt severely injured. He spends the next two episodes healing in the woods of Brokilon.
Meanwhile, Yennefer’s return to Aretuza reveals that her mentor died by suicide, though while she’s there, she also manages to reunite the mages against Vilgefortz. Heartbroken, Yen then locates the still-healing Geralt, healing him fully. He informs Yen of his plan to rescue their chosen daughter, who’s rumored to be en route to Nilfgaard. Geralt tells Yen that she needs to go back to the mages and be their leader, like she was meant to be. Before they part, Yen makes Geralt him promise that it won’t be the last time they see each other.
Whew! That’s where we find Yen and Geralt’s love story heading into Season 4. Though they’re all on different paths, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich assured Tudum, “They each have their own stories, but they’re always trying to get back together.” We know how much the show loves putting obstacles in the couple’s way, but as romance lovers, we hope it doesn’t take too long for them to reunite.
