Hallmark movies are known for happy endings, but the road to get there can be unexpected. That’s exactly the case with A Newport Christmas, starring Ginna Claire Mason and Wes Brown.
Ella is an ambitious socialite in 1905 who wants to use her wealth to help her community, but her father seeks to marry her to Everett Thornton, a man she’s never even met. To clear her head, Ella goes sailing on her boat and wishes for a different life. Because of the Christmas comet passing by, she winds up in 2025 and face-to-face with Nick, a sailor and Newport historian.
As Ella and Nick try to figure out how to get Ella back to her time, she begins to assimilate into the 21st century and develop feelings for Nick. In their investigation, they cross paths with Rex Grafton, the man whom Ella’s father sent to rescue her. Rex went through the Christmas comet portal as well, but ended up in 2005.

Even though she’s fallen in love with Nick, they both know that she has to return to her life in 1905 in order to accomplish her dreams. Ella and Nick share a heartbreaking goodbye at the dock, and while that could have been the end of their grand love story, there was one last chapter. Nick follows Ella back to 1905 and steps in as the mysterious Rex Grafton at the Christmas Eve ball. So, how did Mason and Brown feel about the romantic twist in A Newport Christmas?
“I swooned reading it, and then I have to say I swooned getting to perform it, too,” Mason told Swooon. “I just felt so held and safe and happy in that final ballroom scene and by my scene partner. That ending was really, really magical, especially in that dress.” That was her “princess moment,” Mason gushed.
The actress noted that Ella already had the “grit and determination to go back and do what she has to do,” but getting her “love story happy ending” really took A Newport Christmas to a new level.
“I thought our writers and director nailed the ending,” Brown said. “I do think it was one of the better ones that I’ve seen.”
He called the final ballroom scene where Nick and Ella reunite in 1905 the “highlight of the movie.” Right after Nick says goodbye to Ella in 2025, he figures out that if Rex isn’t the one to accompany Ella back to her time, then he could, since Rex was an only child, wasn’t from Newport, so no one in 1905 could say he wasn’t the real Rex.
Mason pointed out, “It’s a love story with real stakes.” Despite all the stakes in front of Nick and Ella, nothing was going to prevent these two from getting their happily ever after.
