[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked The Musical, and potential spoilers for Wicked: For Good.]

If you haven’t seen Act 2 of Wicked, you’d better buckle up for Wicked: For Good because Elphaba and Fiyero are about to deliver one of the horniest songs in the musical theater canon.

During Wicked (Part 1), director Jon M. Chu peels back the curtain, revealing what happened behind the scenes during The Wizard of Oz. Beginning with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), better known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good (Ariana Grande), meeting at Shiz University, the movie musical explores the witches’ complicated connection long before Dorothy lands in Oz. From loathing your roommate to fighting with your BFF over the same guy, Wicked truly combines fantasy and girlhood in the best way possible.

It’s been a long year since Wicked hit theaters, so like the rest of the world, we are not so patiently counting down the minutes until we’re sitting in the theater taking in Wicked: For Good. Looking forward to the series’ epic conclusion, we couldn’t help but take a deep dive into Elphaba, Glinda, and the rest of their Shiz friend group’s endgame in both Act 2 of the musical and the book that inspired it. From who ends up with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) to if Nessarose (Marissa Bode) and Boq (Ethan Slater) make things official, we’ve answered all of your burning Wicked romance questions below.

Do Elphaba and Fiyero end up together in the book?

Before we break down the ending of Elphaba and Fiyero’s love story in the book, we have to make one thing very clear: The musical and the book are entirely different stories. From the timeline to characters involved, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West creates a far broader and more complex narrative, while Wicked The Musical condenses the story into two tightly woven acts. That being said, here’s how their relationship shakes down in Gregory Maguire’s book.

Get ready to pick your jaw up off the floor because when Elphaba and Fiyero meet at Shiz University, he’s already married. In fact, Fiyero entered an arranged marriage with his wife, Samira, at just six years old. However, there are clearly no feelings there. While Fiyero is just a passing character during Elphaba’s time at Shiz — sorry, no “Dancing Through Life” here — he and Elphaba reconnect five years post-grad and enter a torrid affair, behind the backs of Samira and their three kids. Unfortunately, while all of the “As Long As You’re Mine” sexual tension of their relationship remains consistent between the book and the musical, Fiyero’s fate does not.

While the couple would be content getting it on for the rest of their days in secret, Elphaba’s attempt to kill Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) causes the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) to kill Fiyero in retaliation. From there, Elphaba falls into a coma due to her deep depression. While she is unconscious, Elphaba undergoes an entire pregnancy and gives birth to her and Fiyero’s son, Fiir, without knowing. Once she wakes up, Elphaba travels to Fiyero’s castle to live with his wife and kids (weird). Once there, she becomes incredibly paranoid and wrongly convinces herself that Fiyero isn’t dead, but instead has become the Scarecrow.

BTW, the ending is completely different from the musical, too. In the book, Elphaba and Dorothy come to an understanding moments before Elphaba accidentally catches her cape on fire. In an attempt to save her, Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her, only to find out that Elphaba is deathly allergic to water. Much like in The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy “melts” Elphaba.

Do Elphaba and Fiyero end up together in the musical?

Just as Maguire took L. Frank Baum’s story and turned it on its head, composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz and playwright Winnie Holzman took the characters from Wicked and switched up some of the plot for their musical. The first major difference? Elphaba and Fiyero do get their happy ending.

In the musical, Fiyero is a far bigger character at Shiz, leading to his performance of “Dancing Through Life” and epic role as Glinda’s himbo boyfriend. As Fiyero and Glinda become the school’s “it” couple, Fiyero forms an emotional bond with Elphaba. During Act 2, it’s Fiyero who saves Elphaba from getting caught by the Wizard when she returns to Oz, allowing the two to run away together and sing the aforementioned horny masterpiece that is “As Long as You’re Mine.” However, their bliss is soon interrupted by Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.

After Madame Morrible causes a “change in weather,” leading to a tornado dropping a house on Elphaba’s sister, Elphaba (understandably) crashes out. From there, Elphaba and Fiyero are ambushed in Munchkinland, where he is taken prisoner and tortured by the Wizard, similar to the book. However, in the musical, Elphaba assumes that the Wizard is planning to kill Fiyero and casts a spell to protect him, inadvertently turning him into a scarecrow, during “No Good Deed.”

In the end, Glinda convinces Elphaba to surrender — or at least, fake her death. The two say goodbye (we’re already getting the tissues ready for that emotional moment in Wicked: For Good), and Elphaba “dies” via a bucket of water. In the musical’s final moments, Fiyero, now the Scarecrow, returns to the scene of the crime, where Elphaba emerges out of a trapped door. Together, Fiyero and Elphaba leave Oz.

Do Glinda and Fiyero get married?

For anyone who’s seen the Wicked: For Good trailer, you might have noticed that Glinda and Fiyero appear to get married during the second film. While this does not happen in either the book or the musical, we have a few theories as to how this scene fits into the plot.

In the stage production, Madame Morrible does announce that Glinda and Fiyero are engaged as a publicity stunt. To dive deeper into the plot of the musical for the two-part film, Wicked: For Good could take that idea to the next level by showing the two tie the knot. On the other hand, during Act 2, Glinda comes to the realization that Fiyero loves Elphaba and sings her own reprise of “I’m Not That Girl.” If they choose to extend that scene, Glinda’s wedding could be a dream sequence. We’ll have to wait until the movie comes out to see if Glinda and Fiyero actually get hitched.

Who does Glinda end up with?

Long story short, Glinda ends up alone because she is #NotThatGirl. Turns out, choosing to stay with the Wizard instead of flying off with Elphaba during “Defying Gravity” set Glinda on an immovable path. When Elphaba and Fiyero leave Oz, Glinda is left to the life she had always wanted as a beloved public figure. That being said, she has been completely disenchanted by popularity and lost the only two people who actually knew her along the way. After all, a friend to all is a friend to none.

In the book, Glinda and Fiyero never date. Instead, she marries an older guy named Sir Chuffrey, who is not particularly relevant to the plot. All we really know is that he is rich, she clearly does not love him, and the two struggle to have children. Sir Chuffrey dies soon after Dorothy leaves Oz, and Glinda is left alone, just like she is in the musical.

Do Nessarose & Boq end up together?

Uh, no? Nessarose gets crushed by a house. BUT, before that, she does attempt to put a love spell on Boq, which goes horribly awry. Instead of making his heart soar for her, Nessarose accidentally shrinks Boq’s heart (Grinch-core), making him “heartless.” In an attempt to save Boq from her sister’s curse, Elphaba saves him by turning him into a tin man, who does not need to have a heart in order to survive.
