Who Is Dave Coulier’s Wife? Inside His Marriage to Melissa Bring & Relationship History
In March, Dave Coulier confirmed he was in remission after completing chemotherapy following his October 2024 non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis. Now, just nine months later, the Full House star revealed he’s been diagnosed with HPV-related oropharyngeal tongue cancer, a completely separate diagnosis from his non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Throughout the ordeal, he’s had the support of his wife, Melissa Coulier (née Bring), but it has not been easy. “It’s emotional,” Coulier said on the Today show. “It’s psychologically draining. It’s also a big drain to my wife, Melissa, which is the biggest drain on me, seeing how this affects her.”

What happened between Dave Coulier and Alanis Morissette?
After his divorce from Jayne, Dave famously dated Alanis Morissette from 1992 to 1994. She was 18 years old when their relationship began, while he was 33. They met at an all-star hockey game in Canada, where he was participating in the event and she was performing the national anthem.
When Alanis released her breakup anthem “You Oughta Know” in 1995, it was widely speculated to be about Dave, and he has publicly stated that he believes the track was inspired by him. In 2013, he told HuffPost Live that the lyric, “I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner,” really struck a chord.
“We had already broken up,” he shared. “She called, and I said, ‘Hey, you know, I’m right in the middle of dinner. Can I just call you right back?’ And so I remembered that line when I heard ‘You Oughta Know,’ and it was more like, ‘Uh-oh.'”
However, in a 2014 interview with BuzzFeed, he clarified, “I asked Alanis, ‘I’m getting calls by the media, and they want to know who this guy is.’ And she said, ‘Well, you know it could be a bunch of people. But you can say whatever you want.’ So one time, I was doing a red carpet somewhere, and they just wore me down, and everybody wanted to know, so I said, ‘Yeah, all right. I’m the guy. There I said it.’… It’s just become this silly urban legend that I just have to laugh at.”
In 2022, he recalled hearing the track for the first time in the car and realizing he could be the subject. “I’m like, ‘Wow, this is a really cool hook.’ And then I start hearing the voice. I’m like, ‘Wow, this girl can sing.’ And I had no idea, you know, that this was the record. And then I was listening to the lyrics going, ‘Oh. Oh no! Oh, I can’t be this guy.'”
He then picked up Alanis’ Jagged Little Pill record and listened to it all the way through. “There was a lot of familiar stuff in there that her and I had talked about. Like, ‘Your shake is like a fish.’ I’d go, ‘Hey, dead fish me,’ and we’d do this dead fish handshake. And so I started listening to it, and I thought, ‘Oh, I think I may have really hurt this woman.’ That was my first thought.”
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2019, Morissette noted that “about six people” have “taken credit” for being the subject of the track and said she would not be revealing the truth. “I am intrigued at the thought, or at the fact, that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about,” she admitted.
However, in her 2021 documentary, Jagged, she said Dave was not the person who inspired the beloved song.
Today, Alanis and Dave are on amicable terms after reconnecting years after their breakup. “She couldn’t have been sweeter,” Coulier recalled. “And I said, ‘What do you want me to say when people ask me about this relationship?’ And she said, ‘You can say whatever you want.’ So she was really sweet about it. She was kind.”
