Who Is George Strait’s Wife? His Love Story & Family With Norma Strait
George Strait is a country music legend. In addition to many other accolades he’s received over the years, the “Amarillo by Morning” singer is also one of the 2025 Kennedy Center honorees.
He received the honor during the ceremony on December 7, and viewers will get to see it all go down when the show airs on CBS and Paramount+ on Tuesday, December 23.

How did George Strait meet his wife?
George and Norma met as high school students in Texas. “We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town,” George explained in a radio interview. “I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, ‘I’m missing the boat here,’ and we started dating again.”
In December 1971, the couple eloped in Mexico. According to Country Now, they also had a small ceremony in their Texas hometown afterwards.
The same year as George and Norma’s wedding, he enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army. He and Norma lived in Hawaii while he was stationed there until 1975.
Does George Strait have kids?
Yes, George and Norma had two kids throughout the course of their marriage. Their daughter, Jenifer, was born in 1972 while the couple was living in Hawaii. A son, George “Bubba” Strait Jr., arrived next in 1981.

Through Bubba, George and Norma also have two grandchildren. Bubba and his wife, Tamara, are parents to George “Harvey” Strait III, born in 2012, and Jiliann Strait, born in 2016.

What happened to George Strait’s daughter?
Jenifer was just 13 years old when she died in a car accident in June 1986. The crash took place in Texas. Jenifer was ejected from a Ford Mustang that was being driven by then-18-year-old Gregory Wilson Allen. She and the two other passengers in the car, who were treated for minor injuries, were not wearing seatbelts.
Allen was charged with Class A vehicular homicide. Excessive speed was confirmed as a contributing factor to the crash, but alcohol was not involved. According to San Antonio Express News, the charges against Allen were dropped in 1987.
What does George Strait’s wife do for a living?
Norma was a stay-at-home mother, raising the kids while George pursued life on the road.
“She stayed home until Bubba got out of high school and went to college, but since then she’s come on the road with me too. We love each other and we still like each other. A lot!” George told People in 2012.
Norma also created the Jenifer Lyn Strait Foundation with her husband in 1986 after their daughter’s death. The organization “promotes charitable causes for children, and focuses its donations on various nonprofit organizations.”
