What To Know

  • Jessie Buckley, acclaimed for her role in Hamnet, won Best Actress at the 2026 Oscars.
  • The actress prefers to keep her marriage to her husband out of the public eye.
  • Her husband made a rare appearance at the 2026 Oscars.

Jessie Buckley brought Agnes Shakespeare to life in Hamnet, and Buckley’s powerful performance earned the actress her first Oscar. Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s historical fiction novel of the same name, the film showcases Agnes as a grieving mother, struggling to connect with her playwright husband in the aftermath of their young son’s death. Buckley was a frontrunner throughout the awards season, culminating in the ultimate win.

Buckley has had to make many acceptance speeches this awards season, and she made sure to thank her husband, Freddie, for all of his support when she won Best Actress at the 2026 Oscars. She called Freddie an “incredible dad” and her “best friend.” She added, “I want to have 20,000 more babies with you.” In the audience, a tearful Freddie looked at his wife onstage with so much love.

She first mentioned her husband after she won a Golden Globe. In her speech, she quipped that her husband was “enjoying the free canapes and cocktails.” Freddie beamed as the camera panned to him in the audience.

The actress tends to separate her work and personal life, but she had to show her love in her Oscar acceptance speech. So, who is the man who’s captured Buckley’s heart? Swooon is breaking down everything the 36-year-old has revealed about her relationship with her husband so far.

Who is Jessie Buckley’s husband?

Buckley has mentioned her husband a few times over the years. The New York Times Magazine referred to Buckley’s husband as “Freddie” in an August 2025 profile, mentioning that she “declined to give his last name and age.”

More recently, Buckley opened up about why she hasn’t provided many details about her husband. In her British Vogue interview, the actress said that Freddie is “a mental health worker” whose work requires him to be anonymous. Though Freddie has no plans to join his wife on the red carpet, Buckley joked that he’s been “having a ball eating canapés” at promo events for Hamnet.

Freddie is from the London borough of Islington. Buckley and her husband now live in Norfolk, which is about two hours outside of London. They live in a “really amazing old house” that was built in the 1500s, Buckley revealed on the Table Manners podcast.

When she’s not working, Buckley prefers a simple life at home with her family. “I have tracksuit pants that are eaten by moths to within an inch of their life. I have a bath that’s old. I light fires. We don’t have a TV. I cook. I just do the simplest things, and I need to step off. I need to step out,” she told Deadline. “I’m not method. I definitely like to very gently stir the soup…And who knows what bloody method is, whatever! Everybody has a method of some sort, but I just like to simmer in it, but also be human and be with my husband, be with my daughter, cook, not care. I don’t think I could sustain where I like to go in my work if I didn’t have someplace to come back and just be absolutely human.”

How did Jessie Buckley meet her husband?

Before their 2023 wedding, they met on a blind date. Music executive Marc Robinson set them up five years earlier, leading to a stroll and drinks in East London’s Hackney. Per British Vogue, they planned their wedding in seven weeks. It took place under an oak tree in her garden and involved 40 guests, cheese toasties, mini Guinnesses, and a fire pit sing-along.

Does Jessie Buckley have kids?

She wasn’t a mom when she filmed her scenes as Agnes, but as of March 2026, Buckley has a 6-month-old daughter. After her Critics Choice win, Buckley told press, “I deeply wanted to be a mother, but I have a mother and I know women and we’re pretty epic. We’ve got a lot. We contain multitudes. We’ve got a lot inside of us.”

Buckley shared how she was handling being a first-time mother during her British Vogue interview. “I said to somebody the other day, ‘It’s a bit like being a beetle on your back,” she said. “A friend said to me, ‘Don’t forget that you’re also a new thing when you become a mother.’ A lot of attention is given to this little baby, but your relationship to the world is new, your relationship with your partner is new, your relationship to your work is new. I don’t know what the next story is that I need to tell because it’s seismic what’s happened.”

During her appearance on the Modern Love podcast, Buckley shared an update on her family. “Everyone’s doing great… Everything’s different…Everything’s new. This little human’s new. You’re new. Your relationship’s new. Your whole relationship to the world is new. It’s intense, but it’s just—I just love it. I love it so much,” she said. “I really can see her little personality start to come through. I see this life force in her and determination. And I hope she loves life as much as I do.”
