Following the success of Sidelined: The QB and Me and its sequel Sidelined 2: Intercepted, which stars Noah Beck and Siena Agudong, Tubi is heading back to high school with How to Lose a Popularity Contest. The new movie stars Chase Hudson, who longtime followers know as Hype House creator Huddy, and Ginny & Georgia star Sara Waisglass.
Ahead of the premiere, Hudson and Waisglass sat down with Swooon to discuss all things How to Lose a Popularity Contest, including how Hudson took the major leap from TikTok to the big screen. According to Hudson, he had been planning this career move for quite some time. He told Swooon, “Honestly, I’d been kinda secretly doing lessons for a while.”
While How to Lose a Popularity Contest wasn’t Hudson’s first audition, he made it clear that the Tubi film feels like the “right place, right time” for his acting career to take flight. “I had been doing stuff secretly for a while,” he explained, “and then getting sent this opportunity, I was like ‘Wow, this is really perfect… What a great reintroduction to my acting potential.'”
Hudson revealed to Swooon that he was drawn to How to Lose a Popularity Contest because he really related to his character, rebellious student Nate Reed. Resonating with the script, Hudson joined the project, where he met his costar, who plays Ellie Pearse, a perfectionist overachiever. Together, Nate and Ellie form an unlikely alliance to win the race for student body president and win back their exes along the way. However, with chemistry like Hudson and Waisglass’s, it’s hard not to ‘ship Nate and Ellie from what we see in the trailer alone.
