Chase Hudson and Sara Waisglass are a match made in rom-com heaven!

The duo stars in How to Lose a Popularity Contest, a high school romance movie that follows rebellious Nate (Hudson) and perfectionist Ellie (Waisglass). While Ellie has accepted her fate as an unpopular high schooler looking forward to a future at a prestigious college where no one will call her “Max,” the unfortunate nickname she received from Nate years ago, an unexpected turn of events has them teaming up to win student body president — and maybe each other.

Ahead of the release of How to Lose a Popularity Contest, Chase Hudson and Sara Waisglass sat down with Swooon to spill on the day they met, breaking down both their Zoom chemistry read, their first day on set, and, of course, their first impression of each other. According to the Popularity Contest duo, their friendship started with “15 minutes of burger talk,” as all friendships should.

Waisglass told Swooon, “Chase had already been cast, and then I had a chemistry read, but couldn’t actually go do it in person.” For that reason, they met for the first time on Zoom. She explained, “Usually, you’re supposed to just get on the Zoom, do the scene, bye, but we talked. And then, we started talking about burgers. And it was like 15 minutes of burger talk, and then we went into the scene.” According to the Ginny & Georgia star, the burger talk was so good, she almost forgot they had to work.

While Waisglass’ first impression of Hudson was “he knows his burgers,” she recalled, “I was excited for him. I know that this is a little out of his comfort zone, and he did great, so I was excited to get to know him.” At the same time, Hudson revealed, “I was actually a little nervous.” He told his costar, “You’re just such a professional… And you’re really very bubbly, too.”

The duo also dished on the day they met in person, telling Swooon that their IRL friendship started with a “big hug.” Longtime fans of Hudson, who made it big on TikTok under the name Huddy, know that a Lil Huddy hug is a big deal. Waisglass even laughed while confirming that her mom got a Lil Huddy hug and “really liked it.” So yes, before you ask, Chase Hudson has seen his fans’ Lil Huddy hug montages.

Ten minutes after Waisglass received her first Lil Huddy hug, the duo got into character to film their screentest, where they had to slow dance. As Waisglass put it, “That’s how it works in this industry. You’re thrown into the brush together.”
