This Shark Tank product is bringing back the meet-cute in a world of endless swiping. The only question is: Is connecting IRL still safe?

The January 21 episode of Shark Tank introduced viewers to the Left Field dating app. According to creators Kate Sieler and Samantha Martin, the company launched in February 2025, and at the time of filming, they already had 5,000 users. Unlike Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and the other big dating apps, Left Field focuses on connections rooted in real life.

The duo explained that their dating app uses AI and location data to send push notifications when somebody compatible is in the neighborhood. While viewers adore the idea of meeting someone compatible in person, the location aspect has many questioning how safe the AI-run app truly is. Scroll to find out more about Left Field, if the Sharks invested, and what the creators have said about the app’s safety features.

What is Left Field?

Left Field is a new dating app that focuses on meeting new people “the old-fashioned way.” On the app’s official website, Left Field explains, “We match you with overlaps like mutuals, favorite spots, hometown, neighborhood, and college town.” According to their official description, Left Field’s process works for three reasons: “1. We find people you’re already socially close to. 2. You receive two curated drops each week. 3. Every introduction comes with a short note explaining your connection.”

Did Shark Tank invest in Left Field dating app?

Yes, Kendra Scott and Alexis Ohanian made a joint offer on Left Field, which Martin and Sieler accepted. While Martin and Sieler originally came to Shark Tank seeking $200,000 for 5% stake in their company, the Sharks accepted an offer of $200,000 for 8% stake and 4% in advisory shares. After their meeting, the creators exclaimed, “Now that we have Kendra and Alexis, Left Field is going to dominate the world and the dating app industry.”

Is Left Field dating app safe?

Shark Tank viewers instantly began to question if Left Field’s location-based matchmaking is safe for its users. As one viewer put it, “No bro this is pretty dangerous. You will need more safety measures than that.” However, others felt truly inspired by the unique meet-cute-focused method, writing, “This is such a good idea I almost wish I was back on the market.”

While they could see the reasoning behind concerns about the app, Sieler and Martin told the Sharks, “We put safety first by only sharing information at a vague neighborhood level.” The company explains, “It’s safer [than other apps] by design. Mutuals create trust and accountability.”
