Susan Lucci is telling all in her new memoir, La Lucci, including how she felt after losing her husband of more than 50 years, Helmut Huber, in 2022. Ahead of the book’s release on February 3, the soap star made rare comments about the grief she suffered after Huber died at the age of 84.
“The minute I fell in love like I did with my husband, I knew how vulnerable I was,” Lucci told People. “I was completely lost [after he died]. And it’s so isolating. You feel so alone, even though I had the most wonderful friend … I am so grateful for the people who stood by me.”
The All My Children alum married Hubert in September 1969 when she was just 22 years old. They tied the knot after just eight months of dating and welcomed two children together during their marriage, including actress Liza Huber.
“I just miss him, miss his presence, miss sharing things together, like coffee in the morning,” Lucci admitted, noting that it was hard to pin down “just one thing” that she misses about her partner. She confirmed that she’s still “looking for joy” amid her grief. Lucci notably shared videos of her husband, who was a renowned chef, cooking meals in their kitchen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I don’t fight it,” Lucci shared. “I’m surprised sometimes by it. Certainly there are things like the holidays that are triggers, someone who should be sitting at the table. But I just go with it.”
She referred to Huber as her “rock” and said she still thinks of his wisdom to get her by: “After the rain, the sun shines.”
In November, Lucci opened up to Architectural Digest about losing her husband and revealed that she was unsure what to do about the Long Island home they shared for more than 40 years. “In the end, I realized how much I value this house,” she shared, adding that she decided to renovate the home after losing Huber. “I see my husband everywhere, but in a good way. I decided to redo it and make it a happy place.”
