Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and John (Victor Alli) have been a hot topic amongst Bridgerton fans ever since they wed in Season 3. Francesca finds a quieter romance with John compared to her siblings and their partners. That, paired with Francesca’s ambiguous reaction to kissing her husband for the first time and getting flustered meeting John’s cousin, Michaela (Masali Baduza), has left viewers wondering what Francesca truly feels for the Earl of Kilmartin.

Dodd told Swooon that she hopes Season 4 clears things up. The newlyweds have recently returned from John’s Scottish estate at the beginning of the season. Now that they’re settling back in Mayfair, Francesca realizes that she’s not experiencing the “pinnacle” in the bedroom with John. She goes on a journey to figure out what it is, asking her mother (Ruth Gemmell) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) before deciding to be honest with John.

“They love each other so much. I think it’s clear,” she said. “And just because there is — I don’t even want to say that it’s a disconnect in the bedroom. I don’t think that that’s necessarily what it is because I think it is just learning to communicate, and it is something that Francesca doesn’t know. So, how is she meant to communicate something that she doesn’t understand? And he’s not aware of that.”

Though Francesca and John haven’t totally worked out the kinks in their physical intimacy, their Season 4 subplot doesn’t undermine their love for each other. Dodd explained, “I think because they’re both such introverts and not having these conversations, it’s an amazing thing for them to go through to further their relationship and make them closer and, yeah, be bolder and braver with each other.”

She continued, “I think you can see that, particularly in that scene, that it’s all outside pressure and it’s all internal angst. It’s nothing to do with the two of them, I think. I mean what I’ve just said.”
