‘Bridgerton’ Fans Divided Over Benedict’s Mistress Offer — Is He in the Wrong? (POLL)
[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1.]
By the end of Bridgerton Season 4’s first half, Benedict (Luke Thompson) has come to terms with his feelings for maid Sophie (Yerin Ha), despite the fact that they’re an unsuitable social match. Once he finally puts his fixation with the mysterious Lady in Silver aside, Benedict makes one of Bridgerton‘s trademark love confessions.
After their tryst in the stairwell, Benedict says, “The reality of you has become more tantalizing than any fantasy ever could be, and one I cannot live without. I meant it when I said you deserve better, and I am determined to give it to you, and more. Sophie…”
“…Be my mistress.”
It’s the Offer From a Gentleman moment that fans of Julia Quinn’s book series have been waiting for, but it has plenty of show-only fans up in arms. The debate online has been fierce. Some took to social media to express their outrage at Benedict’s proposition, which caused Sophie to flee without a word.
“Did the Bridgerton romance really come back with this?” says an X post. “Benedict briefly gave Sophie hope for love and a better life — but as his mistress, not his wife. What a tragedy!”
Others came to Benedict’s defense. “That’s the whole point ? The class difference ? He’s of nobility, she’s a maid. In Benedict’s mind (and societal expectations) he thinks for now, Sophie being his mistress is the only way they can be together,” says an X post with over 15,000 likes.
Another added, “I will start my Benedict Bridgerton defense agenda now. White boy did everything right for 4 episodes. He respected Sophie. Apologized whenever he had to. Was always ready to do her whim. His only ‘mistake’ was the offer. Which, if we’re being real, is valid for the time period.”
What’s your take: Do you think Benedict’s heart is in the right place, or were you not a fan of his choice? Tell us in the poll below!
