“There’s a line in the show where Brayden says to Adriana, ‘You have to sell the fantasy,'” Finding Her Edge author Jennifer Iacopelli told Swooon. “When he said that, I was like, ‘Oh, they’re selling my fantasy.’ This is every author’s fantasy. The characters that I imagined up in my head are now somehow portrayed by real people.”

On January 22, 2026, the adaptation of Iacopelli’s teen skating novel Finding Her Edge, starring Madelyn Keys, Cale Ambrozic, and Olly Atkins, premiered on Netflix. By the next day, Season 1 of the series had already broken into the Top 5 of the streamer’s daily most-watched list. Now, fans are eager to find out if the series will get a second season to explore the ramifications of the complex love triangle and new skating partnerships laid out at the end of the first season, based on Iacopelli’s standalone novel.

Following the first season of Finding Her Edge, Jennifer Iacopelli sat down with Swooon to reveal her reaction to the first season, hopes for Season 2, and plans for any future Finding Her Edge stories.

When it comes to the young actors at the heart of the series, Iacopelli gushed, “They’re incredibly talented actors. I always joke that we just found them first.” When it comes to Keys, who plays Adriana Russo in the series, Iacopelli confessed, “I feel like I manifested her out of the ground.” She continued, “The commonalities are startling on every level. All the good stuff, not the things that we rage at Adriana for, but all the good stuff.”

While authors rarely get a say in how their stories are portrayed on screen, Iacopelli revealed, “I was very lucky because Jeff Norton, who is our executive producer and showrunner, is also an author. He knows that those characters are my babies. My ice babies, I like to say,” she laughed. “I imagined them up from nothing, and I was trusting him with them. He kept me very informed, and anytime there was a major change, he’d be like, ‘Listen, this is what we’re thinking, but here’s why.’ Every single time it made sense.”

“This is my speculation, not something they’ve told me,” she continued, “but I think some stuff came out of the book because you’re looking towards not just being one season of television, you know? So there’s some stuff I hope later on, if we are lucky enough to get renewed, that it could come back.” One storyline from the book that we’re really hoping to see in a potential Season 2 is Elise’s (Alexandra Beaton) reality TV show.

After the Season 1 finale, Iacopelli explained, as a viewer, “I’m really looking forward to the Adriana/Riley [Millie Davis] of it all because that’s probably my favorite actual relationship in the show. I love their friendship. I love that they kept what was in a book, in that it never really became a toxic friendship, at least up until that very last moment of the season.”

She continued, “Obviously, I’m really excited about the skating partner swap. What does that look like? Does the fantasy live up to reality?” Now that Adriana is skating with Freddie and Brayden is skating with Riley, Iacopelli asked, “Does that work on the ice?” There’s a big difference between the skaters that Adriana and Freddie were as pre-teens and the skaters that they are today.

Iacopelli is also hopeful to see more of Will (Harmon Walsh) and Camille’s (Meredith Forlenza) dynamic during a potential second season. “I’m fascinated to see what the show does with that, because in the book, that is not a thing at all. I think their chemistry is wonderful. I think the layers to their relationship are great.”

“I’m also really hoping that we get more of the Weston [Aidan Shaw] storyline because he’s a character that doesn’t exist in the book. He could have been such a one-note character, just this hockey bro who’s kind of doofy and in love with a girl [Elise] who just likes that he loves her, but doesn’t really love him. By the end of the season, his character arc was so beautiful, well-rounded, layered, and deep that I was like, I want to know what happens to Weston. Where’s Weston going? I feel like we need justice for Weston in Season 2, although he does have a new girlfriend. Maybe we get a little Katya [Nicole Volossetski] and Weston plot line. I’m excited to see what happens there.”

While there’s still content to pull from Iacopelli’s first book, fans have left Season 1 of the adaptation not only eager for a Season 2 but hungry for another Finding Her Edge novel. Here’s what Iacopelli told Swooon: “Okay, so here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to send people on a little bit of a hunt, and if you know anything about publishing, you might want to do some Googling. If you don’t, there are ways to see what an author is under contract to write. If you dig just a little bit, you will see that I am currently under contract to write a YA novel. Take that for what you will.”

Of course, we’re hopeful that Iacopelli could be working on a Finding Her Edge sequel. However, we’re just as eager to read her next sports romance, Game, Set, Match, which comes out on February 3. Looking forward to her new tennis romance, Iacopelli teased, “If you love Brayden Elliot and you would like to see the British version of him get a happily ever after in a very satisfying way, please read Game, Set, Match.” Challenge accepted!

As for Season 2 of the series, Iacopelli confirmed that the adaptation team is hoping for a renewal just as much as the fans. “Other than just crossing our fingers really hard in group chats and being really excited about the initial response, we won’t know anything probably for a little while. Netflix takes their time because they want to make sure they’re making the right decision. But as soon as we are allowed to tell anybody anything, I’m sure we will be screaming from the rooftops,” she said.
