What To Know

  • The Season 4 finale of Sullivan’s Crossing ends up on a cliffhanger.
  • Cal surprises Maggie with a huge question.
  • Sullivan’s Crossing has already been renewed for Season 5.

Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) certainly didn’t see that coming. After the whirlwind return of her estranged husband, Liam (Marcus Rosner), Maggie spent the majority of Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 trying to figure out her past with Liam and her future with Cal (Chad Michael Murray). After Liam’s departure, she attempted to figure out where she stood with Cal in the Season 4 finale.

Cal kept Maggie at arm’s length, but they ultimately cleared the air. Despite everything that had happened, the love between them never wavered, and they couldn’t deny it any longer. They reconciled, and then Cal shocked Maggie. (Warning: Spoilers for the Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 finale ahead!)

“I know it’s been difficult lately, but I love you, and I always will, Maggie Sullivan,” Cal told Maggie, before taking off his ring and proposing to her right then and there. “Will you marry me?” he asked a stunned Maggie. “Are you sure?” she replied before accepting. Their celebration was cut short by a knock on the door. Jeannie (Trina Corkum) was there to tell Cal that Tracy’s (Emerson MacNeil) foster parents could no longer look after her. Tracy showed up with her suitcase and asked about her room. Talk about an engagement present.

Swooon spoke with Morgan Kohan about Maggie and Cal getting engaged in the Season 4 finale, the possibility of Liam returning, Season 5, and more.

What was your reaction to Cal’s proposal?

Kohan: To be honest, I was like, “Cal’s letting her off the hook really easy.” I was kind of like, “Are you sure? Are you okay?” But I’m really happy with how the scenes turned out, and I think that it’s earned, and then when I watched it, I’m like, “Yeah, that’s good.”

Do you think now is the right time for Maggie and Cal to get engaged?

Kohan: Why not? You know, once they’re committed… I know Maggie is like full-in, Cal’s feeling good post-everything that’s happened. Why waste time? Why not just dive on in? They’ve been through so much together that, if you can continue to stick it out, have the love and support and respect for each other that the two of them do have, I think that they can kind of get through anything.

There is a bit of a cliffhanger. We don’t get the full engagement celebration because Jeannie and Tracy show up. Did the season always end that way?

Kohan: Yeah, that was what’s on the page, and that’s what we shot, and what we ended up on.

How did you feel about the interruption? It’s a little bit of a different cliffhanger than last season, but still a cliffhanger.

Kohan: I kind of like that. It’s always somebody’s health or something. It’s a little bit more of a gentle [cliffhanger], but it’s not going to be a simple journey still going forward. It’s throwing a wrench in the plans and might be a good test, too, though, with what they want their future to look like, but with a child in the mix and how they can kind of navigate that because clearly Tracy feels very differently towards Maggie than she does Cal, and how they can kind of come together as a team.

Will we see Liam again? Or do you think his time in the Crossing is over?

Kohan: I’m just an actor. I know nothing. Nobody tells me anything. I would love for Marcus to be back on set in one way or another, but I have no idea.

Do you think there could be more stories to tell with Liam?

Kohan: I think there is a world where it works in some capacity, but definitely not with Maggie. There would have to be a whole reconciliation with Cal and him and the whole deal there, but I absolutely think there’s a world in which he could come back. It’s just whether or not the audience and the network want all that to happen.

Do you think Maggie will want to get married quickly, or do you think she would want a long engagement? What’s her wedding vision?

Kohan: I don’t think she’d be a particularly fussy bride. I know she’d be pretty chill about things. I think she might be one who wants to kind of take Cal’s lead on timing because of everything that’s happened, but again, I’m just the actor. I have no idea.

When do you start filming Season 5?

Kohan: I believe we’re heading back at the end of summer.

Given how the season ended, do you have any hopes for Season 5?

Kohan: I mean, always. I think with any human being, there’s always more to learn about someone, although it’d be nice to see a bit more of her relationship with what’s going on with her mom and her father, especially with the wedding coming up, what that looks like, and it would be nice too to see her and Cal really sort through stuff rather than just glossing over it and setting up how they want their life to look like, how they communicate, and all that. And then, of course, what her career is going to look like now that Dr. Carlson’s offered her a place, but is she going to want to do her own thing?
