The powers that be (at Netflix) have spoken: another Bridgerton spinoff is in the works. In 2023, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story expanded the fictional world, and just ahead of Season 4’s premiere, executive producer Tom Verica confirmed, “I’ll say this, there have been characters that you have met before, ones that you were invested in, but again, we’re talking about different possibilities and, the great thing about having a cast this size is, there’s a lot of stories to dive into, but the particular ones we’re talking about, it’s going to be really, really enjoyable.”
When we sat down with Bridgerton author Julia Quinn, who novelized the Queen Charlotte novel after the show was created, she explained what story she’d most like to see in a new spinoff. This series could potentially delve into a certain character’s backstory, à la Queen Charlotte, or even adapt another one of her Regency romances. After all, Quinn has written more than one series about the neighbors of the Bridgertons.
“I don’t want to say anything about a particular character from the show ’cause I don’t want to jinx anything,” she told Swooon while she was promoting Spotify’s new Page Match feature and her JQ Editions subscription box. “I will tell you that probably if there is a spinoff, I will not know for sure until it’s final. I mean, I’ll know before you will, but I find these things out after it’s been like lock, stock, and approved across the board. So we’ll see.”
Quinn works as a consultant on the show, but Netflix has the final say in all decisions. However, she does have an adaptation suggestion set outside the realm of Bridgerton: “I have a two-book set called The Two Dukes of Wyndham that I’ve always thought were maybe the most cinematic of my books,” she said. “So I would love to see those. I think that would be really fun. It opens with like a highwayman, so it’s a little more plot-driven and dramatic than the Bridgertons.”
We’ve also seen plenty of fans suggest that Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and Edmund (Rupert Evans) get their own prequel spinoff, detailing their love story before the Bridgerton patriarch’s death. When we brought up that possibility to Quinn, she acknowledged that fans have been asking for a book about the couple for years.
“And I’ve always said no because I said, ‘Look, we all know that he dies young and it’d be so sad,” Quinn added. “And then I have readers saying, ‘Well, we know. We don’t care.’ And then I said, ‘Well, can you imagine if that was the first book of mine you ever read? And then you go to read other books and you find out I killed him at the age of 37.'”
Quinn explained that, in romance novels, it’s implied that the characters live happily ever after into their old age, so she can’t break that expectation. Still, she wouldn’t oppose a Violet and Edmund show prequel if that’s the route Netflix wanted to take. “You know, they could on a TV show,” the author said. “If they want to do that, I am there for it.”
