Asher Angel & Paris Berelc on Why ‘Kissing Is the Easy Part’ Was Meant to Be (VIDEO)

Asher Angel has always wanted to do a rom-com, and when he found out that costar and longtime friend Paris Berelc was involved, signing onto Kissing Is the Easy Part was a no-brainer.

“I think I’m more excited about being in a rom-com, I guess, at this point in my life than superhero movies and like all of that,” the Shazam! actor told Swooon. “I just always wanted to do a rom-com, but I think this one is just really special, especially getting to work with her… Because we’ve known each other for a long time, and it was like the universe was calling us to do this movie together.”

Did Angel and Berelc’s near-decade of friendship make playing love interests easier or harder? “Definitely easier, because also, Asher is just such a sweetie pie, and I’ve always loved him and his family, so in this instance, it made it way easier,” Berelc said. “But I feel like sometimes it may not, in other circumstances. But for us, it was easy.”

Sean (Angel) and Flora’s (Berelc) relationship is far more complicated. Angel plays the no-nonsense overachieving student to Berelc’s popular wild child in Tubi’s latest Wattpad novel adaptation, which comes out on February 13. Sean agrees to date Flora in exchange for a college recommendation letter from her scientist parents. They think Sean will be a good influence on Flora, who resists the idea of her life going down an academic path.

The Alexa & Katie actress teased that Flora is a very “layered” character. “What drew me to Flora is that she is so much more than what people see on the surface, and I feel like I have had a relatable experience like that to her,” Berelc said in a joint interview with her costar. “And she’s fun, and she’s spontaneous, and she is really nice to everyone. She sees the best in everybody. And I could learn that from her.”

Sean learns something from Flora, too. “I think what I love most about Sean is the way that Flora shape shifts his world in terms of not always being uptight,” Angel said. “Not always being like, homework, homework, homework. She helps him kind of be a kid again and live life and actually go out and have fun… [He’s] scared out of my mind, but she’s helping him become adventurous again.”

“I love a friends-to-lovers trope, maybe a little bit of enemies-to-lovers trope, or even opposites attract,” Berelc added. “And it’s fun to watch two people who are so different in every way possible come together, and then you not only get to see a very beautiful relationship, but you also get to see how it affects them individually, as their own person.”
