What To Know

  • Evan Roderick stars in the new Hallmark movie Because of Cupid.
  • The Canadian native revealed to Swooon that he loves a Hugh Grant rom-com.
  • His new movie features a must-see musical moment.

Valentine’s Day is about as Hallmark of an event as Christmas is, so of course, the network that loves love as much as we do is dropping a new “Loveuary” romance on February 14. And we gotta say, Because of Cupid is a trope-tastic treat for fans of friends-to-lovers looking for something to soak in after a Galentine’s night out.

In the adorable original, Hallmark’s latest breakout Evan Roderick (Providence Falls) costars with Amy Groening (‘Twas the Date Before Christmas) as Marcus and Naomi, two BFFs who enter a Valentine’s Day mocktail competition. But when Cupid meddles with a love potion, Marcus and several of their friends are unexpectedly affected, forcing Naomi to confront whether friendship might be the greatest love story of all. We recently caught up with Roderick at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s annual TVfest on their Atlanta campus to quiz the Vancouver export about the flick, as well as his own plans for the most romantic date on the calendar. Turns out, the Spinning Out alum is feeling the pressure!

“I can’t drop the ball because my wife’s birthday is February 15th,” he laughs. “So it’s like I got to make the 14th special, and now I’ve got two days in a row celebrate.”

Thankfully, he seems to be as well-equipped for the holiday as Cupid is.

What makes you swoon?

Evan Roderick: That’s a hard question. I don’t know. My wife. My wife makes me swoon, but if it was 2015, Jennifer Lawrence, probably. But that’s about it. No more. I’m a married man.

What is Because of Cupid‘s swooniest moment?

Roderick: There’s a scene closer to the end of the movie. It’s so hard without giving too much away, but there’s a scene where there’s perhaps a wedding involved, and Amy Groening does some beautiful singing. And I swooned. I was very swooned!

What is your favorite rom-com?

Roderick: Something Hugh Grant…I’ve always liked Hugh Grant quite a bit. Love, Actually. I mean, you can’t really go wrong.

What is your favorite Hallmark movie?

Roderick: I’m really good friends with Steve Bacic, and he did a military movie [All for Love with Sara Rue] where he played a military guy, and I think it came out probably 10 years ago. I really liked that one. Hilarious. Also, we saw Andrew Walker‘s A Safari Romance, and I loved the whole setting.”

If there was a Hallmark movie about you, what would it be called?

Roderick: Oooohhhh…the title would be Still Figuring It Out, and it would be a dude who’s yearning for a particular career and maybe woman in his life, and he’s trying his hardest, but he can’t quite get past his own flaws. Something like that. I like playing characters that are flawed.

What TV couples did you grow up shipping?

Roderick: Oh, Mischa Barton and Ben McKenzie in The O.C. And Gabriel Macht on Suits with Donna…Sarah Rafferty. I loved that chemistry.”

How do you make sure your Because of Cupid character feels different that other romantic guys you’ve played?

Roderick: In this one, the character was super bright. In the script, they describe him as two golden retrievers in a trench coat. So, my voice is kind of higher than it normally is, [and there’s] physicality stuff, like I’m kind of bouncing around a bit more to kind trying to embody that literal line in the movie. I’m trying to embody that.

What’s the most romantic gesture you’ve ever made?

Roderick: Proposing to my then-girlfriend in Connecticut at this really beautiful barn with horses running around. It tooks months to plan, and I’ve never been more nervous in my life.

Which Hallmark star would you like to work with?

Roderick: When we were in Kansas City for the Hallmark Christmas Experience, people kept saying that Tyler [Hynes] and I looked like brothers. Then Tyler and I were in the bathroom and were washing our hands, he goes, “My girlfriend said that we looked like brothers, and we should do a movie together.” I said, “Yeah, we should!”
