Melissa McCarthy is one of many stars in attendance at the 98th Academy Awards. Though she isn’t a nominee this year, it’s still shaping up to be a memorable night for the actress. She’s set to reunite with her Bridesmaids costars Rose Byrne — who’s nominated for her performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You — Kristen Wiig, Ellie Kemper, and Maya Rudolph on the Oscars stage, almost 15 years after the rom-com hit theaters.
But that’s not the only thing making the night special for McCarthy. The ceremony doubles as date night for the actress, who brought along her husband, Ben Falcone. (He also had a role in Bridesmaids!) It’s not a rare occurrence for the longtime couple. They’ve been together for over two decades.
Just a few months ago, McCarthy penned a tribute to her husband in honor of their wedding anniversary. “Twenty years ago today I got hit with a lucky stick! I married the love of my life and card carrying hypochondriac. xoxo,” the comedian wrote on Instagram. How did Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone meet?
Contrary to what you might be thinking, the power couple didn’t meet in Hollywood. They crossed paths in Illinois, where McCarthy was a freshman in college and Falcone was in high school. During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Falcone recalled, “She was very, very goth. All my friends at that age were like, ‘I wish my mom would let me dress like her.'”
He continued, “It was probably the dead of summer, and she had a very heavy cape and a nice shade of blue hair.”
“And his eyes just went to hearts!” McCarthy quipped in the joint interview.
Their romance didn’t officially begin until 1998, when they both signed up for a writing class at Los Angeles improv theater The Groundlings. There, Falcone performed a skit about an “inmate that really liked his new roommate,” and it caught McCarthy’s attention. “I immediately was like, ‘Oh, he’s strange. I like him,’ ” she said during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, adding that they became friends after their first class.
In 2003, they shared the screen for the first time in Gilmore Girls. While McCarthy starred as Lorelai Gilmore’s best friend and chef Sookie St. James, Falcone had a small guest spot on the Season 3 episode “Say Goodnight, Gracie.” The couple married on October 8, 2005.
Do Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone have kids?
McCarthy and Falcone welcomed their first daughter, Vivian, in 2007. Gilmore Girls fans might remember that McCarthy’s pregnancy was written into the show. The couple keeps their kids out of the spotlight for the most part, but Vivian has appeared alongside her mom in The Boss and Thunder Force.
