During Season 8 of Before the 90 Days, Laura, a 47-year-old from Vancouver, Washington, traveled to Turkey to meet her long-distance boyfriend, Birkan, for the first time in person. While their connection was clearly strong, Laura discovered that Birkan was in a massive amount of debt and had a strong affinity for gambling, which he argued was unrelated to or even helping the situation. According to Laura’s bestie, Michal, this was a major red flag.

However, Birkan wasn’t the only one with a complicated past. When Michal arrived in Turkey to check in on Laura, Michal revealed that she had made a move on him in the past. While Birkan originally didn’t trust Michal, believing that he was trying to steal Laura away from him, the two found more common ground than either expected.

Are Laura and Birkan still together?

Laura and Birkan are no longer together. On May 4, Birkan posted a Q&A on his Instagram Story where he revealed that he and Laura were no longer together. When asked why, he explained, “Life changes, world changes, worldview changes. Let’s just say I have a bigger cause than my desires now.”

While he did not reveal what that “bigger cause” was during his Q&A, he later told a 90 Day Fiancé blogger, CutToTheDrama, who revealed the reason on TikTok. CutToTheDrama read his message to fans, first explaining, “He broke off the engagement to join the Turkish military.”

Why did Birkan break up with Laura?

After announcing their split, Birkan told CutToTheDrama on TikTok, “When we started this relationship, the world wasn’t in such a messed-up place, and I thought I could think about the future. But right now, after everything happening, I just thought even if I got the visa, I can’t go. No matter how much I criticize the government, this is still my country, and I have no hesitation giving my life for it, like my ancestors did back then. Whatever it takes.” He added, “My cause is bigger than my desire, no regrets, only memories. See you in a different universe.”

In CutToTheDrama’s comments section, Birkan commented, “Love you all,” confirming that the message did come from him. At this time, Laura has not commented on the split.

During the final episode ahead of the Tell All, the two got engaged. In a TikTok live after the episode aired on April 19, Laura showed viewers the red string Birkan gave her as an engagement ring, with two knots around her ring finger. She explained that one knot was the one Birkan tied around her finger, and the other was the one he had tied around his. Now, it is clear that they have split.

At the start of the season, Laura revealed that she met Birkan on Snapchat, of all places. Originally, Laura was looking for a cute Christmas filter, but as soon as she was on the app, tons of guys slid into her DMs. She revealed, “I had no idea there was a find a friend feature, so that piqued my interest more than the actual filters.
