Kelsey Swanson’s unconventional relationship was a big topic of conversation on the April 2 premiere of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island. The new Bravo star admitted that her relationship is “unorthodox” because her boyfriend of 10 years “dates multiple” women.
“For the first half of the year, my man is in Miami and, when he’s in Miami, he’s with somebody else,” Kelsey explained. “But now, I’m at that crossroads where I just hit 30, and I want more from myself. I want to be in a committed relationship with one person, but at this stage in his life, there’s not one thing he’s going to change.” Kelsey realized that her boyfriend, whom she did not name, “is who he is,” so she has to either “accept it” or “leave” the relationship.
During a group picnic, which Kelsey was not present for, Rosie DiMare questioned whether Kelsey was a polygamist because of the lifestyle she and her boyfriend live. A rumor even began that Kelsey possibly had a second boyfriend herself, and in a preview for the season, Kelsey says, “The two people in my life are the most wonderful people ever,” prompting Rosie to ask, “Now you’re saying that you do have two boyfriends?”
Swooon went straight to Kelsey herself to find out whether the polygamy rumors are true, and she insisted they’re not.
“I [didn’t] even know what that word meant at the beginning,” Kelsey told us. “No. I’m not a polygamist. I feel like that’s such a dramatic term for my relationship. No, not a polygamist.”
However, she admitted that she and her boyfriend have had a “don’t ask, don’t tell relationship” at times. “I let him do what he wanted, and he pretended he didn’t know what I was doing,” she explained. “It was a weird dynamic. I think polyamorous? Maybe that. We accepted a certain relationship, but not polygamous. We weren’t even married.”
