When it comes to finding love on TV, the stars of Farmer Wants a Wife came into the experience with certain expectations.

The Fox reality dating show returns for its fourth season on April 21. Hosted by Kimberly Williams-Paisley, the new season will follow a brand-new trio of bachelors looking for the perfect person to share their life on the farm with.

All three of this season’s leads began their journey with a relationship checklist. “I genuinely have struggled to find quality girls in today’s day and age, so I figured, I was like, ‘This is the perfect opportunity to find, potentially, my future wife,'” farmer Sean Cavanaugh exclusively told Swooon on the Season 4 set last year.

Sean may only be 22 years old, but he’s already looking for someone to build a life with. “I feel like I grew up a lot faster than people my age typically do. I feel like I’m a little bit more mature than the regular 22-year-old, so I am really ready to settle down and start a family,” Sean shared. “One of the things I’m most excited for in my life is to become a father, and my parents are super excited for grandchildren, so I can’t wait to start that process. But I do really want to make sure the girl I marry is the right one, so it’s a process, for sure.”

Like Sean, farmer Braden Pridemore has faced his own fair share of slim pickings in the dating pool. “I’m in a really good spot in my life, as far as my career, my home, and I’m just kind of missing that one piece, and that’s somebody to share it with,” he told Swooon of joining the show. “This is untraditional by any means, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. And I thought, you know, why not? Take a jump.”

Some of Braden’s relationship green flags are finding “someone really down to earth,” “somebody that I can have fun with,” and someone that “matches my dry sense of humor.” A talented musician, Braden said it would be “nice” for his future partner to share his love of music.

As for relationship red flags? “Someone who’s not down to earth. I don’t typically respond too well to that,” Braden revealed. “I like someone who’s pretty secure with themselves, because I feel like, if you’ve got a few insecurities that hold you back — and at the end of the day, everybody does. Everybody has insecurities, and I realize that. I have insecurities myself. But if you’re not really secure with yourself, I feel like it’s hard to be in a secure relationship.”

Like his fellow two farmers, Brett Maverick saw Farmer Wants a Wife as an opportunity to “meet girls that I never would have met if I hadn’t done it.” Describing himself as a “pretty reserved” person, Brett said he can tell a lot about a person just by listening and observing.

His quiet nature has helped him pick out several relationship red flags over the years. “Most of it’s based off of the character — how they hold themselves, how they treat others — and also with the green flags, as well,” he told Swooon. “But with the group of girls that I’ve gotten to meet, they’ve all been really great, and it’s made this process a lot harder because of that. I haven’t really seen a whole lot of red flags at all, if any, but I do see a lot of green flags with them. And so, for me, that’s been amazing, because these girls are genuinely great people.”

Given the lack of red flags within his group of girls, Brett said he’s optimistic about finding lasting love on the show. “I would have never met these girls outside of this, which is kind of crazy to think about because now we’re all super close, and I actually might find somebody that comes out of this whole process,” he gushed.
