‘Off Campus’: Khobe Clarke Teases Beau Maxwell’s ‘Expanded’ Role in Season 1 (VIDEO)

If you’re a fan of Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus books, you probably noticed quite a few Beau Maxwell (Khobe Clarke) appearances in the promo for Prime Video’s TV adaptation. Beau doesn’t just sit next to Garrett (Belmont Cameli) in class in the Season 1 teaser — the full trailer shows him decked out in a duo costume with Dean (Stephen Kalyn), his bestie from the books.
Readers know that Off Campus Season 1 is based on The Deal, which only briefly features Beau. He plays a larger role in the later books, particularly Dean’s The Score. At Creation Entertainment‘s Page, Screen, and Everything in Between convention on May 10, actor Khobe Clarke confirmed what many fans already suspected: You’ll get to know Beau better in Season 1 than you do in The Deal.
“Yeah, it’s for sure more than the books,” Clarke told Swooon, just ahead of the show’s premiere. “There’s some great scenes with me and Dean and Tuck [John Tucker, played by Jalen Thomas Brooks] and the whole cast. There’s a good amount.”

Does his expanded role mean that readers can expect an unfamiliar Beau? In the book, Garrett describes Beau as every bit “the typical college quarterback” with “the looks, the swagger, and most importantly, the talent.” But that’s not all that makes him popular on campus — Beau’s kind and friendly with everyone.
“Other than them expanding on him for the show, I don’t think [that he’s different from the books],” Clarke explained. “He’s kind of there to be a really good friend and a nice guy and provide some sober thought to his friends. I think he does that in the book well, and I think they captured it in the show even better. Sorry, Elle.”
At this point in the show, though, you can expect a fair amount of comedic moments from Beau as well as the heart-to-hearts. “Beau keeps it light,” Clarke quipped.
Though he’s only read part of The Deal at this point — “it got awkward for [him] reading about people [he] knew” — Clarke is well aware of his character’s book future. He also knows how invested fans are in his character. “It’s so surprising and heartwarming,” Clarke said. “I definitely didn’t anticipate all the love, but I welcome it now. It’s amazing. I didn’t think that would be the case.” Watch the full video above.
