What To Know

  • Courtside is an upcoming queer sports rom-com set in the world of women’s basketball.
  • Three WNBA players are set to appear in the movie.
  • The romantic leads have not been cast.

WNBA star Sydney Colson already has us sold on her upcoming movie, Courtside. “If you like Love & Basketball and Bend It Like Beckham and Bring It On, but you found yourself wondering, ‘Could this maybe be a little bit gayer?’ We have great news for you,” Colson said as she announced the queer sports rom-com.

She isn’t the only professional basketball player attached: Gabby Williams and Theresa Plaisance have also signed on to appear in the project, which is being penned by Abbott Elementary writer-producer Brittani Nichols. “It feels like I’ve been waiting my whole life for this kind of excitement to surround women’s basketball,” Nichols told Deadline, “and I’m excited to blend my love of sports, lesbian tension, and comedy into one project.”

We’re right there with you if you immediately need to know more about Courtside — including when it’ll be released. That’s why we did a deep dive into all the updates revealed so far, which you can find below.

What is Courtside‘s release date?

Courtside was announced on May 21, 2026, but a release date wasn’t shared. It’s still being developed by media company Run-A-Muck. Rest assured, we’ll let you know as soon as we know more!

Who is in the Courtside cast?

Colson, Williams, and Plaisance have been cast in the movie, according to Deadline, but it’s not clear who will be playing the romantic leads. However, Colson and Plaisance, who share a podcast, have some experience in entertainment. They star in the unscripted buddy comedy “The Syd + TP Show.” Colson also doubles as an executive producer on Courtside, which is set to be directed by Carly Usdin.

“I don’t think I’ve ever said yes to an opportunity faster than I did for Courtside,” Colson said on Instagram. “I respect Carly and Brittani’s sense of humor so much and being involved with this in any capacity sounded amazing. I’m elated to see a new generation of women’s sports films. I can already feel how transformative this movie will be in terms of representation on screen for minorities, queer people, and women’s basketball players and fans alike.”

What is Courtside about?

The movie revolves around an injury-plagued women’s basketball superstar. She has her sights set on winning the championships, but things are upended when she falls for a teammate.

“Making a movie like this is super exciting to me because I grew up playing basketball,” Colson explained. “I would have loved as a young person to see my story depicted on screen, so to see a team of people who want to ensure that others can see characters and storylines that feel personal and familiar to them. I’m so excited about it.”
