It’s a truth universally acknowledged that The Other Bennet Sister offers just as many standout quotes as Pride and Prejudice.
When the stars of the BritBox series stopped by the Swooon studio for our Sizzle Reel spotlight, we didn’t just have them break down Mary Bennet’s (Ella Bruccoleri) love triangle with Tom Hayward (Dónal Finn) and William Ryder (Laurie Davidson). The trio played a giggle-inducing game of “Who Said It?” which you can watch at the top of the page. They had to determine which quotes came from the show itself, Janice Hadlow’s TOBS novel — which the show adapts — and the book that started it all.
As fans of the TV series already know, The Other Bennet Sister is a spinoff of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, focusing on overlooked middle child Mary Bennet. While Elizabeth, Jane, and the rest of her sisters find husbands, Mary is left behind — so she takes her fate into her own hands. Mary becomes a governess in London, where she finds independence and (initially unbeknownst to her) two romantic prospects.
The premise leads to quite a few swoonworthy bits of dialogue, complete with that Regency Era flair. Something else fans already know is that Hayward and Ryder give P&P‘s Mr. Darcy a run for his money. What’s more, Mary herself delivers quite a few memorable lines. When she admitted she “prefers facts to whimsy,” for one, Mary charmed us and Mr. Hayward.
But those stellar quotes — some of which are pulled from the book it’s based on — could be easily confused with P&P. And you know we had to throw some tricky ones in there to see how well Bruccoleri, Finn, and Davidson remember The Other Bennet Sister’s script. We got some fun banter — which line does Finn think could be a Chappell Roan lyric? — and plenty of laughs as a result.
