Pennington and Merrell first met in 2010 while he was filming a show in Toronto. They stayed connected through mutual friends and remained friendly for years before reconnecting in 2020, then quarantining together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have admired Kellee from afar for years,” Pennington previously told People. “She’s a beautiful person inside and out. Luckily, our paths finally crossed at the right time. It’s one of those things where you just feel happy being around a person. I never thought I would get married, but she changed that. Glad I waited for the one.”
The Trading Spaces alum proposed in July 2021 and married Merrell four months later. They wed in front of just eight guests at their home in Savannah, Georgia, which was under construction at the time.
In 2022, Pennington shared a compilation video of his and Merrell’s relationship progression and captioned it, “A story of two people who had a mutual crush but didn’t know it…”
