- Ella Hunt explains what the “massive revelation” means for both of them moving forward.
Is it just us, or is there a vibe between AJ (Ella Hunt) and Josh (Jack Martin) on Not Suitable for Work?
Episode 3, “The Philadelphia Thirst Monster,” marks a major turning point in their relationship. (Obviously, spoilers ahead.) Since she moved into her new apartment building, AJ’s been fully aware of the fact that her neighbor was her first college hookup. Josh, who hasn’t been a fan of AJ since she moved in, doesn’t remember until the end of Episode 2. Thanks to Davis (Will Angus), the whole group learns of their history mid-dinner party in Episode 3.
Upon learning that Josh has been calling her for (you guessed it) “The Philadelphia Thirst Monster,” AJ is furious. The confrontation gives AJ the opportunity to ask Josh why he ghosted her after their Model UN fling. Josh reveals that she took a sledgehammer to his ego by asking, “Is that it?” after they did the deed. AJ, in turn, shares that the only reason she said that is because Josh took her virginity. It isn’t until they’re alone later that Josh admits that it was his first time, too.
In both cases, their college encounter was more significant than either of them realized. “It’s a massive revelation at the beginning of the season, I think, for both of them,” Hunt told Swooon. “Discovering that they were each other’s first when they both withheld that information is pretty meaningful, but I think that they are both very inclined to dismiss it, and to not treat it with the gravitas that perhaps a different set of people would treat it with. But yeah, it’s definitely there.”
Now that the air is clear, AJ and Josh are on friendlier terms. What could that mean for them going forward? By Episode 3, AJ is crushing on her boss (Jay Ellis) and being crushed on by Josh’s roommate. Josh assures the head-over-heels Davis that he has no feelings for AJ earlier in the episode.
“It’s definitely brewing under the surface,” Hunt explained of the hookup revelation. “But I think part of the arc for them is allowing themselves to be different people now and allowing each other to see themselves in a way that perhaps they weren’t projecting as teenagers or as young adults.”
