What To Know
- Not Suitable for Work star Ella Hunt breaks down AJ’s steamy kiss with her boss Bill and what it means for their dynamic.
- Plus, she compares their journey to classic Nora Ephron rom-coms.
Not Suitable for Work is really living up to its title in Episodes 4 and 5, as AJ’s (Ella Hunt) role at Fisher Stassen is put in a precarious position as sparks start to fly with her boss Bill (Jay Ellis). Warning: Spoilers for Not Suitable for Work, Season 1, Episodes 4-5 ahead!
When AJ worms her way into an assignment, wishing to work on an account representing Spanx and a girdle company, she believes that the best way to win over the potential client is by having a woman’s perspective on the team. Ultimately, AJ learns that Bill will have to apologize for past comments he’d made in front of the businesswoman connected to the company (played by Stephanie Hsu).
She even gets Bill and colleagues to wear the product under their clothes to prove their commitment to the potential partnership, and it works. The success tips Bill and AJ’s working relationship into something more personal than professional, much to viewers’ enjoyment, when he admits he really wants to kiss her.

The pair share a steamy lip-locking moment, and AJ’s left to wonder if the kiss meant more than just a passing, heat-of-the-moment exchange. All throughout Episode 5, Bill’s avoidant behavior leads AJ to think the worst until Bill ultimately shows up at her apartment door, telling her it did mean more to him, hinting at a brewing relationship between the coworkers.
“Yeah, they go on quite the journey,” Hunt teases of AJ and Bill’s arc together. “I was so giddy reading the episodes and anticipating this coming up,” she admits. “I love Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally… You’ve Got Mail. I’ve never really gotten to do a rom-com storyline or set of storylines like this, and I think that the workplace scenes between AJ and Bill are really satisfying because they’re both clearly very talented and ambitious and maybe come from a similar upbringing.”
“Neither of them has come from money, and so they’re really hard workers,” Hunt continues to explain, adding, “they’re tough, and I think when AJ shows that grit and they have that fight in the office where where he says ‘You’re acting like it’s Fisher Stassen and whatever your last name is, and she goes, ‘You know it’s Pascarelli.’ That spark of, wow, this woman is confident, and we can spar together; it’s incredibly sexy.”
As for capturing their first kiss, Hunt says, “It felt really natural and right that this was the progression for the characters, and I think there is something pretty delicious in the taboo of it.” The taboo being that bosses shouldn’t be kissing their employees, ethically speaking, but it doesn’t hurt from a viewer standpoint…
“As an audience member, I think we’re daunted for AJ because we know what she might be embarking on emotionally speaking, and it was really fun to play this with Jay,” Hunt concluded. As for where the season will take them, viewers will have to continue tuning in, but for now, it’s full steam ahead on the AJ and Bill train.
