What To Know

  • In the Every Year After Season 1 finale, Charlie spots a photo of himself, Sam, and Percy in his boss’ office.
  • It’s an Easter egg for fans of Carley Fortune’s books.
  • The photographer remains a mystery in the Season 1 finale, but Every Summer After’s sequel reveals her identity.

After finishing Every Year After Season 1, we’re betting that Charlie Florek’s (Michael Bradway) fate is your most pressing concern. But — unless you’ve read Carley Fortune’s One Golden Summerwe bet you’re also still wondering who took that photo. (Warning: Season 1 spoilers ahead!)

In the Season 1 finale, Charlie stops by his office and notices a photo hanging on his wall. It shows Charlie alongside his brother, Sam (Matt Cornett), and Percy (Sadie Soverall) on their boat in Barry’s Bay one summer. Charlie’s boss only tells him that his wife bought it at a gallery in British Columbia, but readers already know the identity of the photographer who captured that special moment.

In the case that you haven’t — which is likely the case if you’re here — get the full rundown on Alice Everly and how she factors into Charlie’s story below.

Who took the photo in Every Year After Season 1?

When she was a teenager, Alice Everly spent a summer at her friend’s cottage in Barry’s Bay. She’d watch the trio fly around the lake on their boat, leading to the aforementioned photograph. It sparked Alice’s passion for photography.

Who is Alice Everly in Every Year After?

Alice becomes the protagonist in One Golden Summer, Fortune’s sequel to Every Summer After. (One Golden Summer happens to be the title of Alice’s photograph, too.) The book picks up years after her summer in Barry’s Bay. Now 32 and living in Toronto, the introverted Alice is an accomplished photographer, but she’s struggling with the pressures of her job. When her grandma suffers a shattered hip, Alice decides to take her to the cottage to recover. Alice also thinks that Barry’s Bay will help her feel like she’s 17 again, which she needs to rediscover her passion and move on from a breakup.

Alice almost physically appeared in the Season 1 finale, showrunner Amy B. Harris told Swooon. “We had a version where she walks through the airport, and [Charlie] sees her when he’s going to pick up his family,” Harris said. “What we finally realized is we didn’t [have to bring her in yet]. She still has to be a notion, but one that, if you are a lover of Carley Fortune, is just a perfect little Easter egg… We knew we needed Alice in some way to come in to launch us to Season 2.”

Who does Charlie end up with in Every Year After?

As you’ve surely guessed by now, Alice is Charlie’s endgame love interest. As she unwinds, takes care of her grandma, and rediscovers her passion for photography, Alice falls in love with Charlie, whom she originally meets as a family friend of the cottage’s owner. The owner asked Charlie to help get the cottage ready for Alice and Nan before they arrive. From there, Alice and Charlie develop a deep friendship before they become an item.

Prime Video has yet to renew Every Year After for a second season, but the photograph clearly indicates that it’s building towards Charlie and Alice’s romance. But who would you want to see play Alice in a potential Every Year After Season 2? Let us know in the comments below!
