On June 24, Variety revealed that HBO Max’s next Adventure Time spinoff will be Adventure Time: Bubblegum & Marceline, following the beloved queer couple, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen. During the original series, viewers shipped the unlikely duo, hoping that their rocky road to friendship would end in an enemies-to-lovers romance. Of course, viewers know that the two finally did get together during the 2018 finale of the series, a moment Variety called “a radical move for kids’ TV at the time, with which the wishes of masses of queer fans were realized.”
The script for Adventure Time: Bubblegum & Marceline is currently in the works, so we’re going to have to wait a little longer for our favorite duo to return to our screens. What will Bubblegum & Marceline be about?
Right now, it’s unclear whether Adventure Time: Bubblegum & Marceline will take place after the events of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Season 2, or as a prequel to the original series, which many viewers are hoping for. The official logline reads: “Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen journey across the farthest reaches of Ooo, encountering familiar faces and new dangers.”

When did Bubblegum and Marceline meet?
Bubblegum and Marceline interact for the first time onscreen during Season 2, Episode 20, “Go With Me.” During the episode, the duo indicates that they not only already know each other but also share some bad blood. Speculation about a past romantic connection took off after Season 3, Episode 10, “What Was Missing,” when Marceline debuted her iconic song about Bubblegum, “I’m Just Your Problem,” which hinted at a past breakup.
In Adventure Time: Distant Lands Episode 2, “Obsidian,” Bubblegum and Marceline’s past relationship was confirmed, revealing that they broke up when they were younger, letting centuries pass before crossing paths again.
When did Bubblegum and Marceline start dating?
While Bubblegum and Marceline’s relationship was always “fanon” — after all, Bubblegum slept in the shirt Marceline gave her for years — the two finally got together during the last episode of the series. The two shared their first kiss during the 2018 Adventure Time finale, “Come Along With Me.” Fighting a losing battle against a monster, Bubblegum tells Marceline, “I love you, okay?” In response, Marceline says, “At least they’ll find our skeletons entwined forever,” and Bubblegum reminds her, “I don’t have a skeleton, but that’s pretty romantic!”

Luckily, the two survive and can later be seen dancing together. As Marceline tells Bubblegum that she has a lot more songs to sing, “real sappy ones,” Bubblegum confesses, “Good. I’ve always loved your songs.” After the finale, their romantic relationship has continued throughout Adventure Time‘s spinoffs.
