‘Every Year After’s Joseph Chiu Plays a Game of Who Said It: Jordie or Shrek? (VIDEO)
Yes, you read that headline right. In the spirit of Jordie’s iconic “layers” line in the finale of Every Year After Season 1, we put actor Joseph Chiu to the test, quizzing him on lines from his character and the ogre from which he borrowed his metaphor.
In case you missed it, Jordie tells Sam (Matt Cornett) that he adores Chantal (Aurora Perrineau) because everything about her is a surprise. He explains, “She’s got layers. She’s like an onion with a mint chip ice cream inside.” Of course, Jordie isn’t the first to pull an onion-layers metaphor. This line mirrors the quote from Shrek, “Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Get it? We both have layers.”
Surprisingly, Chiu himself hadn’t made the connection between the two lines. Shocked, he asked us, “Is that from Shrek?” But don’t worry, he, like the rest of our generation, is a massive fan of the ogre rom-com. In fact, he completely aced our quiz: Who said it: Jordie or Shrek?
While you can watch the full video above to find out how much of a Shrek-aficionado the Every Year After star is, here are a few of our key takeaways from this very serious test.
Shrek’s onion quote is deeply “Jordie-coded.” That said, Jordie’s onion quote takes the metaphor a step further: “He knows that mint chip ice cream is Chantal’s favorite flavor.” It is yet to be determined whether ice cream exists in Duloc, Far Far Away, or Shrek’s swamp.
A musical theater fan at heart, having played both Danny Zuko and Emmett Forrest in college, Chiu told us, “I also love Shrek the Musical. I’m more obsessed with that.” If he could play any role in the stage adaptation, he would want to be Dragon, which he argues, “The dragon’s always the best part.”
And, yes, before you ask, the Every Year After star did attempt Shrek’s accent while reading a quote. While you can be the judge of whether he aced it or not, he did admit, “I can’t do accents.”
