Kylian Mbappé is leading France through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, breaking goal-scoring records and making himself a frontrunner for the Golden Boot. If Mbappé were to win — it would be his second time earning the tournament’s top award — it would be one of many trophies he’s earned since he made his professional debut at 16 years old. Since the 27-year-old has had such a long and successful career, we were curious about the people who’ve been supporting him along the way.
Mbappé’s parents have been a central part of his journey to becoming one of the best players in the world. The process wasn’t without its hurdles, according to his dad. “I want to stress the sacrifices,” he said, according to AS. “We’re talking about what it takes, on a human level, to have a child who plays soccer professionally. I watched Kylian leave home at 12 or 13 years old.”
As they cheer on their son in soccer’s biggest tournament, you can get to know Mbappé’s parents, Wilfrid Mbappé and Fayza Lamari, below.
Who are Mbappé’s parents?
Wilfrid, who was born in Cameroon and later moved to France, is a former soccer coach. He worked at French club AS Bondy for decades. “I’ve always been a coach,” he told Le Parisien in 2019. “I had problems with some coaches who were only interested in winning. I didn’t care about that. We had to develop players first and foremost.”
He also coached his son during his childhood. “From the age of two or three, Kylian told me every day that he wanted to play football,” he told the outlet. “But I waited. When I took him with me for the first time, I saw how passionate he was, so I coached him. We had a rule: what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch or in the locker room. At home, I became just Dad again, and there were no more coaches or briefings.”
Wilfrid said that he noticed his son was a standout player from an early age. “Even as a child, Kylian dazzled kids two or three years older than him. After Clairefontaine, he joined Monaco, and I told him, ‘You’re going to turn pro.’ He replied, ‘How do you know? Are you Nostradamus?’ I then asked him what kind of pro he wanted to be and that it was up to him. Kylian forged his own path.”
Since his son’s fame skyrocketed, Wilfrid noted that nothing has changed in regards to their family and friends. “We know where we come from. We’re still the same. We’ve kept almost all the same friends. If you say no to someone one day, they’ll say you’re full of yourself,” he said.
Fayza is also involved in the soccer world. After playing handball for AS Bondy — she was also part of the French national handball team during the late 1990s — Fayza became sports agent and businesswoman. She founded the Fayza Lamari Agency in 2022, leading the company in the years since. She handles her son’s business negotiations. She’s also the chairwoman of Interconnected Investment Holding, which owns the French soccer club SM Caen.
Fayza rarely gives interviews, but she told L’Equipe about the pressures of her son’s fame in 2025. “I don’t like the word ‘icon.’ It scares me,” she said. “People talk about fame but not the expectations and consequences. I’m more proud of the man he’s become than the player.”
Are Wilfrid Mbappé and Fayza Lamari still together?
The soccer player’s parents married in 1997 before separating in 2022. They both manage their son’s career as agents, so they remain on good terms, per The Athletic.
Does Mbappé have any siblings?
The French player has two brothers: Ethan Mbappé and Jirès Kembo-Ekoko. Ethan was born in 2006 and also plays professional soccer. He started at Paris Saint-Germain before signing on to Lille in 2024. Back in 2019, his dad said, “Ethan is forging his own path, and I’m glad he’s writing his own story.”

The eldest, Jirès, was adopted by the Mbappé family. He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, living there until he was six years old. His parents placed him with the Mbappés so he could study in France, per Gulf News. He’s a former professional footballer who represented the Congo on the national level.
