What To Know

  • Asymmetry is an upcoming film starring Richard Gere and Diana Silvers.
  • The movie is adapted from Lisa Halliday’s acclaimed 2018 novel about a secret age gap romance.

New age-gap romance alert! While plenty of on-screen romances have proven that age is just a number — from Rivals‘ Rupert (Alex Hassell) and Taggie (Bella Maclean) to The Idea of You‘s Solène (Anne Hathaway) and Hayes (Nicholas Galitzine) — others have been more controversial. Soon, we’ll find out which category Asymmetry, starring Richard Gere and Diana Silvers, falls into. (Those who have read the book it’s based on will have a head start.)

Asymmetry charts the secret relationship between a famous 70-year-old author (Gere) and a much younger editorial assistant (Silvers). On July 6, People shared the first photo from the film, showing when Gere’s Ezra and Silvers’ Alice meet for the first time in New York City’s Central Park. If that photo sparked your curiosity, you’ve come to the right place. Swooon has all the latest details on Asymmetry, from the book’s plot to the adaptation’s release date.

When is Asymmetry coming out?

No release date has been shared quite yet. Deadline announced the film in May 2026, and filming began in July. Mid or late 2027 would be the earliest window we’d expect it to hit theaters or streaming.

What is Asymmetry about?

The synopsis for the movie has been revealed: “Their one moment of eye contact sparks a connection that leads them both down a life-changing rabbit hole, where they create a private world just for two. Ezra, famous for his audacious work, finds someone with whom he can be openly vulnerable, and Alice finds the courage to explore her own aspirations as a writer. Until it is all put at risk when their secret relationship is exposed.”

What book is Asymmetry based on?

The movie adapts Lisa Halliday’s 2018 critically acclaimed novel, Asymmetry, which once made The New York Times’ most remarkable books of the 21st century list. The first half of the book explores Ezra and Alice’s relationship. The second half tells the story of Amar Ala Jaafari, an Iraqi-American man detained at Heathrow Airport. It’s unclear if the movie will include both plots.

Halliday, Marshall Herskovitz, and Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai) wrote the script. Zwick is also directing the film after an eight-year hiatus from feature films. “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Ed and Marshall on transposing Alice and Ezra’s story for the screen,” Halliday said in a statement. “I am enormously grateful to them for their humor, ingenuity, courage, compassion, and dedication.”

Zwick said, “Like so many others, I was charmed by Lisa’s book, not just because it’s emotional, insightful, and very funny, but because it’s about two people who discover that what the world calls asymmetry can in fact have another name: love.”

How old are Richard Gere and Diana Silvers?

Gere, now 76, is no stranger to an age-gap romance. The actor played a 50-year-old man who falls in love with a 21-year-old terminally ill woman (Winona Ryder) in 2000’s Autumn in New York. In 1990’s Pretty Woman, Gere and Julia Roberts played love interests and have an 18-year age gap in real life. (Speaking of real life, Gere married a woman 33 years his junior, Alejandra Silva, in 2018.)

Silvers, who is best known for Olivia Wilde‘s Booksmart and Netflix’s comedy series Space Force, is 28. That makes her 48 years younger than her costar.
