Who Should ‘Doc’s Amy Be With: Jake, Michael, or Ben? (POLL)

At the end of Doc Season 2, a new love interest was introduced for Amy (Molly Parker), who’s already in the middle of a triangle — but she doesn’t remember her past (fully) with all of them.

The series follows Amy after she loses eight years’ worth of memories after a car accident. She woke up thinking she was still married to Michael (Omar Metwally) and had no idea that she had moved on with Jake (Jon Ecker). After falling back with both of them — and for Jake again — over the first two seasons, she ended the latest finale seemingly closing the door on Michael (they’d just make the same mistakes if they got back together) and acknowledging the challenges she and Jake have faced with both their exes remaining in their lives.

But the finale also introduced Ben (Blair Underwood, a series regular for Season 3), a trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon. And as the final scene revealed, he has a personal video on his phone of Amy wishing him a happy birthday in 2022. She broke their rules — never texting or putting anything in writing — to do so. She also said she didn’t know what they are. That’s bound to come up with Amy having flashes of memory and Ben coming to work at the hospital. In other words, Amy’s love life is poised to be very complicated in Doc Season 3.

“Amy didn’t see a path forward with either Jake or Michael at this point. Now, one could argue that what she’s about to do is throw herself back into work, which has not always been the best path forward for Amy,” executive producer Barbie Kligman told our sister site TV Insider. “Amy had to look at it and go, ‘If I got back together with Michael now, what would that look like? It would look like the same mistakes all over again. I will punish him. I have to deal with the fact that when people disappoint me, I react in a way that is terribly unhealthy, and I gotta figure out how to fix that before I can be with anyone.'”

She continued, “On the Jake side, it’s like, ‘It was a really nice theory to think that a part of him could still love Rachel and a part of me could still love Michael, but we could be together and make it work. I’m not sure that’s true. I’m not sure I can be with a man, a part of whom loves someone else,’ which is interesting because people do it all the time when they are widows or widowers. It’s like, they will always love the person who they were with first. And maybe depending on what phase you’re in in your life, maybe you can say, ‘Oh, well, OK, they have their place, and I have my place, and that’s fine.’ I think Amy did not want to compromise on that front.”

As for Ben, Kligman was quick to note that when Amy was with him, she was otherwise single (so it wasn’t an affair). “These two people are both sort of a version of the smartest person in the room. So, when they work together, there will be certain fireworks and a certain banging of heads, which is also an interesting way to go down a potentially romantic path with Amy, because we haven’t really done that before,” she said. “Her and Michael had a history. Her and Jake had an innate chemistry and a history, but she didn’t remember it. This is different. This is the runway of a more will they or won’t they from the ‘Oh my God, that person is so frustrating’ place, which is a fun way to go.'” Now that they’ll be working together, it’s up to him to decide if he wants to tell her about their history before she potentially remembers.
