What To Know

  • She spoke about her experience on Shameless and addressed Fiona’s love life.
  • Fiona had several notable love interests on Shameless, including Jimmy/Steve, Gus, and more.

Emmy Rossum has thoughts about Fiona Gallagher’s love life. The Shameless actress appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast on July 8 and didn’t hesitate to disclose who she thought Fiona should have ended up with on the show.

Fiona had plenty of love interests over the course of her run on the show — Jimmy/Steve (Justin Chatwin), Gus (Steve Kazee), Sean (Dermot Mulroney), to name a few — but one man always stood out in Rossum’s eyes.

Host Alex Cooper asked Rossum which of Fiona’s exes she should end up with, and Rossum immediately responded, “Jimmy/Steve…They’re just so good together.”

She acknowledged that Jimmy/Steve wasn’t “always honest at all, but I just love them together.” Fiona and Jimmy/Steve were love interests from the very first episode of Shameless. They had a tumultuous and all-consuming on-again, off-again relationship. Jimmy/Steve left after Season 3, but he returned briefly in Season 5 and tried to get Fiona back.

When Fiona pleaded with him to let her go, he took off for good. Many fans had hoped these two would ultimately reunite by the time the show ended, but it didn’t happen.

So much of the Fiona and Jimmy/Steve magic was because of Rossum and Chatwin’s incredible chemistry. “He was cast before I was, too,” Rossum said, noting that they had starred together in the 2009 movie Dragonball Evolution.

“I already knew him, and the second that I knew he was cast I couldn’t wait to work with him again,” she said.

In 2025, Chatwin reflected on Jimmy/Steve and Fiona’s complicated relationship. “It was an unhinged romance,” Chatwin told ScreenRant. “Sometimes those people that you have the most deepest, toxic love for, you need to walk away from just to live your life and go on. For me, that was the story that [John] Wells was telling. Sometimes you’ve got to push away from the thing that feels the best. But I think Jimmy/Steve’s out there somewhere.”
