What To Know

  • The Friday Night Lights TV series is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
  • Adrianne Palicki and Taylor Kitsch played Tyra Collette and Tim Riggins, an on-again, off-again couple.
  • Palicki reflected on the deep, enduring connection between Tyra and Tim, emphasizing Tyra’s unwavering support for Tim and the significance of their final scene together.

Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) and Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) had an on-again, off-again relationship in Friday Night Lights that felt akin to many high school romances. They had other love interests, but they never quite left each other’s orbit.

Tyra went off to college at the end of Season 3, but she did return to Dillon in the fifth and final season. Her last scene of the show was with Tim as they talked about the future. Tyra admitted that she’d been in love with Tim since they were kids, but she had dreams she needed to accomplish. “Maybe one day our dreams can merge together,” Tim said, alluding to a potential reunion down the road. Adrianne Palicki looked back at Tyra and Tim’s relationship and the meaning behind that final scene.

“I love that when she comes back, we really get to see her humanity because she was the only person who wrote Tim Riggins while he was in jail,” she told TV Insider. “She was the only person there for him. She has always loved him. I asked Jason [Katims] if I could say that: ‘I have loved you since I was five years old.’ I feel that tells the whole story of their connection and why Tyra has loved Tim since then.”

As she reflected on the relationship, Palicki said that they had “the two biggest arcs compared to anyone on the show. They had the biggest transitions.”

She loved that Tyra left Dillon and was “thriving” in college. But would Tyra and Tim ultimately get back together? “In my opinion, she became a Tami Taylor helping other girls like herself, and maybe her and him are still involved. I like that hopefulness. I think it was right to play in the Landry versus Tim Riggins, as for a lot of people it was Team Landry and Team Riggins. But I think it was the right thing for Tim and Tyra because they were the most alike. I loved being there for the last shot of the show. It was so emotional.”

There have been rumblings of a Friday Night Lights reboot in recent years, and Palicki admitted that she’s “torn” over how to feel about it. “If anyone asked me to come back to play Tyra Collette again, absolutely! Especially if the same people were involved,” she said. “However, I understand letting something breathe. It was a perfect show. I think it was a perfect, timeless show, and I love it so much. I loved the people involved. Bringing in a new world, I don’t know.”
